Job summary

IMS Recruitment is recruiting a BIOMEDICAL SCIENTIST / LABORATORY MEDICINE SCIENTIST for the pathology department of a hospital in Gibraltar. The role is a 6-month fixed-term contract to perform analytical testing in Haematology, Blood Transfusion, and Coagulation.

Applicants must be HCPC registered with a BSc or higher in Biomedical Science and at least 3 years’ relevant experience. The package includes salary pro rata £31,897–£37,845, free accommodation and return flights.

Qualifications

• HCPC registration in the UK is required.
• BSc or higher degree in Biomedical Science.
• At least 3 years’ experience in the relevant specialism.

Responsibilities

• Perform analytical testing in Haematology, Blood Transfusion, and Coagulation.
• Validate and authorize patient results in accordance with laboratory policies.
• Perform blood grouping, antibody screening, crossmatching, and issue of blood components.
• Investigate abnormal results and liaise with clinicians where necessary.
• Ensure compliance with quality management systems and accreditation standards.
• Perform analyser calibration, troubleshooting, and advanced quality control procedures.
• Participate in internal and external quality assurance programmes.
• Maintain accurate documentation and adhere to health and safety regulations.
• Authorise complex transfusion decisions, including investigation of transfusion reactions and resolution of serological discrepancies.
• Validate and authorise donor serology results, ensuring safe release of blood components in accordance with transfusion guidelines.
• Daily monitoring of blood component inventory and stock levels.
• Ensure full compliance with quality management systems, haemovigilance requirements, and accreditation standards.
• Develop, review, and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in line with best practice and regulatory guidance.
