Permanent contract
We have a fantastic opportunity for a full time permanent Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our Haematology team and support our Pathology Service.
Candidates must be HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist and hold an MSc or equivalent in Biomedical Science.
Key Responsibilities:
The role of the Haematology Senior Biomedical Scientist is to carry out investigations on samples of tissue and body fluids to aid in the diagnosis of disease and monitor the treatment of patients by:
1. Assisting in the provision of reliable and accurate analytical data for the Trust, in accordance with relevant regulatory standards and requirements (including ISO 15189, HFEA and MHRA).
2. Working as part of a team of Biomedical Scientists to deliver, within budget, a patient-orientated medical laboratory service to contribute to efficient and effective care.
3. Acting as a Haematology section leader, managing and co-ordinating the day-to-day technical activities.
4. Demonstrating an exemplary standard of work at all times; including the supervision, training and guidance of laboratory staff as required.
5. Providing specialist advice to clinicians as to the appropriateness of tests and timescales.
6. Assisting in the ongoing achievement of departmental quality standards.
7. To have attained specialist knowledge in Haematology through a minimum of three years experience as a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist working in a Haematology laboratory demonstrated by the possession of an IBMS approved Masters level qualification or equivalent.
8. Participating in the agreed working patterns of the department to provide a safe and effective service.
9. Deputising for the Haematology Operational Manager as required.

Qualifications
Essential
• MSc or equivalent in Biomedical Science
• Registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist
• Be able to demonstrate a broad level of specialist Haematology knowledge and practical experience by possession of an Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Specialist Portfolio or equivalent
• Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable
• Management qualification
Experience
• Three years experience in a specialist Haematology BMS role within a clinical laboratory
• Evidence of supervisory experience
• Evidence of training and developing staff
• Evidence of contribution to service improvement
Skills and Knowledge
Essential
• Be able to demonstrate the ability to problem solve in a methodical and logical manner
• Ability to use highly complex automated equipment and associated computer software systems
• Ability to maintain standards of accuracy and hand to eye coordination in repetitive manual techniques and working in a methodical organised manner
• Ability to undertake the technical validation of results
• Communication and interpersonal skills
• The ability to work using own initiative and without supervision
• The ability to supervise and train laboratory staff effectively
• Competent in the interpretation of diagnostic laboratory results
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Good knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and procedures
• A knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and procedures within a clinical laboratory
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to manage staff

• Practical knowledge of Haematology equipment and methods
