Applications are invited to join us in developing our service for our patients in West Wales. We are looking for a highly committed and motivated individual to join our Haematology team as we start to introduce subspecialisation into the health board. Our dedicated and forward-looking team of 7 consultants provide a comprehensive haematology service in the four hospitals in an area of outstanding beauty. This post will introduce a Myeloma subspecialty to our team as part of a redesign of haematology services across the Health Board and will continue to develop as part of the wider transformation process. Support for the post includes Associate Specialists, specialty doctors, clinical fellow as well as foundation trainees. The team also includes haematology CNS team and Specialist pharmacists.

Main duties of the job

Clinical - The appointee should be able to demonstrate experience in the management of Myeloma and General Haematology. The successful candidate will develop this subspecialty across the health board and working alongside the generalist consultants.

Inpatients - The appointee will participate in an attending and on-call rota for the Carmarthen site. At the three peripheral sites, the contribution is consultative to the local medical team.

Outpatients - The appointee will be expected to participate in 3-4 clinics per week, within Myeloma and General Haematology. Consideration for other subspecialist workload could be considered, depending on applicant's experience to date.

There is a weekly health board wide MDT and opportunities to join other MDTs from all Wales MDTs.

The duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.

The post holder will contribute to all aspects of the general haematology and haemato-oncology work including active participation in all departmental meetings and the on-call rota.

10 Sessions with 1 SPA per week

The appointee must be someone who can help develop our rural service to ensure excellent patient care.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support Skills
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • FRCPath or equivalent
  • Appropriate Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD or MSc or equivalent
  • On Specialist Register with GMC or CCT due ) within 6 months of interview date
  • Or CESR or equivalent European Qualifications for Specialist Registration

Clinical Experience

  • Broad based experience clinical haematology
  • Knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent)
  • Competence in clinical haematology
  • Expertise in clinical haematology

  • Safe and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience of communicating bad news
  • Meet the requirement of the GMC's Good Medical Practice
