As Departmental Health and Safety Manager, you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring our department remains a safe and compliant space for innovation and discovery. Working closely with the senior leadership team, you'll provide expert guidance on general, laser, biological, and chemical safety, supporting a diverse community of around 30 academic staff, 60 professional services staff, 80 postdoctoral researchers, and 150 postgraduate students.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Acting as the primary contact for all health and safety matters
  • Providing technical safety advice and support across the department
  • Developing and maintaining safety documentation and guidance
  • Promoting a positive safety culture through clear communication and collaboration
  • Networking with other safety professionals both within the University and the wider research community.

We're Looking For Someone With

  • A meticulous eye for detail and strong communication skills
  • Confidence in engaging with a wide range of people, from researchers to contractors
  • A problem-solving mindset and the ability to adapt to changing needs
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative when needed.

The successful applicant will be educated to a post-graduate degree level or equivalent, having significant experience working within a research environment. They will have demonstrable knowledge of health and safety regulations, including practical experience in managing all aspects of H&S, experience in delivering training and an understanding of how to successfully merge good safety practices with good research.
