Job summary

The Abbey is seeking an experienced tax professional to own the group's tax compliance and advisory activities, ensuring timely and accurate returns and robust financial controls. You will report into the Head of Financial Reporting and lead the preparation of VAT, Corporation Tax, CIS, Gift Aid and Employment Tax returns while advising senior stakeholders.

  • ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CTA or equivalent CCAB qualification.
  • Strong knowledge of UK tax compliance including Corporation Tax, VAT and CIS.
  • Experience managing relationships with HMRC and external advisers.
  • Ability to interpret tax legislation and communicate complex issues to non-tax stakeholders.
  • Experience identifying tax risks and delivering practical business-focused solutions.
  • Strong analytical, reconciliation and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication abilities.
  • A proactive and commercially minded approach with a focus on continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead preparation and submission of VAT, Corporation Tax, CIS, Gift Aid and Employment Tax returns.
  • Act as primary point of contact for HMRC and manage tax-related correspondence.
  • Provide technical tax support and advice to senior stakeholders across the business.
  • Support strategic projects and assess the tax implications of business decisions.
  • Manage relationships with external advisers and ensure a smooth flow of information.
  • Monitor changes in tax legislation and accounting standards, assessing their impact on the organisation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve tax efficiency and strengthen financial controls.
  • Support statutory reporting processes and tax disclosures within the accounts.
  • Drive process improvements, system enhancements and the development of robust tax policies and procedures.
  • Leading on complex tax consultations and technical projects across the group.
