Job description

About the role

At National Grid, safety is at the heart of everything we do. We're looking for a technically focused UK Group Safety Specialist to join our Group Safety, Health & Wellbeing team and help shape the safety standards, governance frameworks and assurance activities that support our operational businesses.

This is an exciting opportunity to work across a complex, high-risk environment, partnering with safety and operational leaders to strengthen safety performance, drive consistency and influence best practice across the organisation.

You’ll use your expertise in construction and/or electrical safety to provide technical guidance, analyse operational risks and performance trends, and support the continuous improvement of Group-wide safety frameworks.

This role is based in our Warwick office on a hybrid basis.

What you'll do
  • Supporting the development, implementation and continual improvement of Group safety standards, policies and governance frameworks.
  • Providing technical safety guidance and subject matter expertise to operational and safety teams across the business.
  • Analysing safety performance data, trends and leading indicators to identify risks and improvement opportunities.
  • Conducting safety assurance activities, audits and inspections to assess compliance and effectiveness of safety controls.
  • Supporting incident investigations, root cause analysis and the sharing of lessons learned across the organisation.
  • Developing practical safety guidance, toolkits, resources and communications that support operational teams.
  • Working closely with operational stakeholders to understand emerging risks and translate insights into actionable improvements.
  • Assessing the effectiveness of safety management systems and business unit implementation of Group expectations.
  • Producing clear technical reports, presentations and recommendations for a range of audiences, including senior leadership.
  • Supporting the development and delivery of safety training, workshops and awareness initiatives.
  • Representing National Grid within industry forums and collaborating with external stakeholders to identify and share best practice.
  • Driving innovation and continuous improvement by identifying new approaches, technologies and industry developments that enhance safety performance.
What you'll need
  • NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent health and safety qualification).
  • Experience operating within high-risk industries such as utilities, energy, construction, infrastructure or engineering.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation.
  • Practical experience of construction safety management.
  • Experience supporting or conducting audits, inspections, investigations and assurance activities.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends and develop meaningful recommendations.
  • Ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
  • Experience creating technical reports, presentations and safety documentation.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel nationally as required.
Desirable
  • Technical background or operational experience within electrical transmission, distribution or utility environments.
  • Experience working with safety management systems and governance frameworks.
  • Knowledge of behavioural safety, human performance or operational risk management principles.
What you’ll get

A competitive salary between £50,000 - £59,000 per annum- dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
