Job description

Group Head of Tax - £80,000 - £90,000 + Bens

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a technically strong tax professional to take ownership of a tax function within a rapidly developing, purpose-driven organisation. They are appointing their first senior tax hire and want someone to create the tax function rather than inherit one.

In the early months you will be hands-on and wide-ranging, setting the foundations before launch. You will decide how tax should work across the business and make sure it is built into new systems and ways of working from the start. As the organisation grows, you will have the chance to recruit and lead a specialist team covering indirect and direct tax.

Key responsibilities:-
  • Design the tax operating model from scratch, including the policies, controls, governance structure and annual compliance timetable
  • Take ownership of VAT and wider indirect tax, deciding how the organisation’s core transactions, charges, deposits and funds flows should be treated
  • Set up corporation tax compliance and reporting, and put the wider direct tax approach in place
  • Review customs obligations and other developing tax requirements as the business model takes shape
  • Partner with Finance and IT colleagues so that tax logic, data and reporting needs are built into the ERP implementation and surrounding operational platforms before launch
  • Create processes that can scale, covering tax code set-up, data standards, reconciliations, management reporting, control activity and automation
  • Act as the main contact for HMRC and external advisers on complex or high-value technical issues
  • Give commercially minded tax input on contracts, new partnerships and any changes to the scheme’s design or operations
  • Put a tax risk and controls framework in place, and keep clear records of key positions and the judgements behind them
  • Hire, mentor and grow a tax team as the workload increases, which may include specialist Indirect Tax and Direct Tax Managers
Ideally you will be:-
  • Qualified CTA, ACA or equivalent with experience in practice and / or industry
  • A strong UK tax background, with VAT and indirect tax as your particular strength
  • Solid working knowledge of corporation tax and the wider UK tax landscape
  • A track record of working with HMRC and external advisory firms
  • Experience of building or improving tax processes, controls and governance
