Job summary

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust is seeking a Group Head of Research and Development to provide strategic leadership for the R&D portfolio. You will drive group-wide strategies, ensure regulatory compliance, and work with internal teams and external partners to expand research opportunities and clinical trial participation.

Responsibilities include budgeting, contract negotiation, staff development and effective governance, with multi-site collaboration across partner NHS trusts to achieve

Qualifications

• Degree-level qualification or higher in leadership and management.
• Master’s-level qualification or equivalent research-related experience.
• Experience developing and implementing successful research strategies.
• Proven ability to achieve targets across commercial and non-commercial research activities.
• Experience negotiating and managing research contracts.
• Specialist knowledge of clinical research governance, legislation and regulatory frameworks.
• Understanding of NHS R&D Strategy and funding streams.
• Knowledge of NHS clinical research policies locally and nationally.
• Senior NHS management experience.
• Senior-level research management experience.
• Proven ability to lead, manage, train and develop staff.
• Experience managing budgets.
• Ability to interpret national policies and translate them into local procedures.
• Strong presentation and report-writing skills for board-level reports.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
• Experience building professional networks at local and national levels.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Group’s R&D portfolio.
• Develop and implement group-wide R&D strategies and business plans.
• Ensure research activities meet performance targets and regulatory requirements.
• Oversee management and administration of research activities.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards and governance.
• Use data and governance to provide assurance on research performance at board level.
• Manage R&D budgets, including income, staffing and non-staff expenditure.
• Ensure projects are properly costed and contracts established with partners.
• Monitor compliance with funding agreements and obligations.
• Build relationships with stakeholders and represent the Trust externally.
• Promote research participation and recruitment into clinical trials.
• Support collaboration across the four Black Country partner NHS Trusts.
