Role Description

This role is primarily based at our Norwich location, UK, with the option of remote working in accordance with AST’s policies.

The Group Financial Controller will play a pivotal role within the leadership team, contributing to the achievement of strategic goals and ensuring robust financial systems and governance. This position will be responsible for driving growth and sustainability while fostering a supportive people culture, improving financial reporting, decision support, and performance management across the organization.

You will be a key player in the Board’s efforts to foster a performance-driven culture with strong governance and the implementation of best-in-class processes. This role requires commercial acumen and ensure impeccable finance data and standards to inform the Board and drive the company's success in maximising profitability in multi-disciplinary profit centres, 4 of which are in international locations (USA, South America, Asia and Australia).

Responsibilities and Deliverables

• Board-Level Contribution: Act as a strategic and operational finance lead for advice to the Board, contributing to the overall strategic direction, improving EBIT, and driving long-term growth and sustainability. Maintain focus on creating a high-performance people culture by setting clear objectives, developing skills, and supporting key finance team members.
• Financial Leadership: Lead the finance team (both UK and Internationally) to deliver strong financial reporting, decision support, and improved data quality. Ensure that financial governance and control frameworks are continuously enhanced.
• Management Information Development: Develop and refine management information to identify and drive profitable growth opportunities, improve working capital, and spot risks. Review customer profitability and supply chain performance to maximize efficiency and profitability.
• System and Data Improvement: Lead initiatives to improve systems and data quality across finance and other areas of the business. Utilize the latest technology to build and maintain systems and controls that support the Group’s continued growth.
• Commercial Leadership: Collaborate with the MD and Board to identify new commercial opportunities, evaluate ROI, and make investment recommendations to support the company’s growth.
• Budgeting and Forecasting: Oversee planning processes, budgeting, and forecasting to manage costs, working capital, and financial performance across the business.
• Process Improvement: Identify and implement operational efficiencies, continually improving working practices and procedures to drive performance improvements across the organization.
• Investor Relations: Manage relationships with external advisors to ensure the company maintains strong communication and robust governance practices.

Skills/Experience/Qualifications

• Qualified Accountant: Strong qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) with significant experience in a similar financial leadership role.
• Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead, manage, and motivate teams effectively. Demonstrated experience in building a high-performing finance team.
• Strategic Contribution: Previous experience at Board level, with a proven track record of contributing to strategy formulation and execution, particularly in driving commercial and financial performance.
• Systems and Data Expertise: Strong knowledge of finance systems and data management. Experience in transforming systems and data quality to improve performance and drive efficiency.
• Fast-Growth Experience: Previous experience in fast-growth environments is highly advantageous, especially if you have a background in financing for growth.
• Commercial Acumen: Demonstrable experience in improving EBIT through commercial deals and managing operational efficiencies.
• Stakeholder Management: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a high level of emotional intelligence. Ability to manage relationships with internal stakeholders, investors, and external advisors effectively.
• Change Management: Ability to identify and implement organizational and process improvements, with a focus on scalability and operational excellence.
