Your new company

Our client is a well-established and highly reputable civil engineering and construction contractor based in Preston, with over five decades of industry expertise. Known for delivering high-quality groundwork and infrastructure projects across the North of England, they have built strong, longstanding relationships with clients in both the public and private sectors. With a steady turnover of circa 25 million and continued growth, this business offers stability, opportunity, and a commitment to excellence in all they do.

Your new role

Our client is seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join their team and take commercial responsibility for a range of groundworks and civil engineering schemes across the North West. This role will be split between the head office in Preston and various sites, providing the ideal blend of office and on-site working. You will play a key role in managing project finances, from tender stage through to final account, ensuring profitability, cost control, and compliance with contract terms.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the full commercial lifecycle of groundwork and civils projects

  • Preparing and reviewing Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and valuation reports

  • Controlling costs and ensuring that budgets are met

  • Procuring subcontractors and managing subcontract packages

  • Carrying out cost analysis and identifying areas for savings

  • Producing monthly cost reports and forecasts

  • Assessing and agreeing variations and change management

  • Maintaining strong communication with site teams and clients

  • Ensuring contractual compliance with NEC3/NEC4 or other relevant forms of contract

What you will need to succeed:

  • Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor within the civil engineering or groundworks sector

  • Strong understanding of BOQs, cost planning and management

  • Knowledge of NEC3 and/or NEC4 contracts preferred

  • Excellent cost control and cost reporting skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and cost management tools (BlueBeam desirable)

  • Strong communication, negotiation and analytical skills

  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying

  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites across the North

What you get in return:

You'll be joining a business with an excellent reputation, a strong order book, and a down-to-earth, supportive team environment. The company promotes long-term careers, not just short-term hires, and many of their staff have been with them for several years.

  • Competitive salary between 45,000 - 60,000 (depending on experience)

  • Attractive benefits package including car allowance, fuel card, pension, and 25 days holiday plus bank holidays

  • Opportunities for career progression within a stable, growing contractor

  • A mix of office and site-based working offering variety in your role

  • A professional environment that values safety, integrity, and quality workmanship
