Job summary

Surrey County Cricket Club is seeking a Casual Grounds Person to maintain world-class playing surfaces to the highest standards. You will be part of a passionate team and contribute to turf care in a sporting environment, with the potential for progression to a senior grounds person as you gain experience and qualifications.

  • > Good turf skills and ideally some experience of preparing a cricket wicket.
  • > Good horticultural knowledge.
  • > Turf science qualification or equivalent desirable but not essential.
  • > Ability to carry out basic maintenance on equipment.
  • > Spraying qualification desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the Club’s playing surfaces are maintained and presented to the highest standards using turfcare machinery, equipment, and techniques.
  • Carry out match-day duties such as setting up practice facilities/fielding nets, boundary rope, sightscreens, advertising boards, wicket repair and re-marking.
  • Handle ground preparation and renovation, including rain covers, mowing, and operating machinery.
  • Collaborate with groundstaff to ensure smooth matchdays and non-matchdays.
  • Perform tidying, strimming, hedge cutting and routine equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain health and safety in the workplace and comply with procedures.
  • Perform other duties consistent with grounds preparation at a leading sporting venue.

The Position

We’re looking for a Casual Grounds Person to help maintain our world-class pitches to the highest standards. You’ll be part of a passionate team that takes pride in ensuring our grounds are always looking their best. This hands‑on role requires flexibility, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in turf care, especially in a sporting environment. It’s an excellent opportunity to grow your skills in a supportive setting, with a clear path to becoming a senior grounds person if you gain the right experience and qualifications.

What You’ll Do
  • Ensure the Club’s playing surfaces are maintained and presented to the highest possible standards using the latest turfcare machinery, equipment, and techniques.
  • Carry out match‑day duties such as setting up practice facilities/fielding nets, positioning boundary rope, setting out fielding discs, positioning sightscreens, setting up advertising boards, sweeping wicket at interval, repairing foot holes, and re‑marking wicket.
  • Handle all aspects of cricket ground preparation and renovation, including deploying rain covers, mowing, marking out, and operating pedestrian and tractor‑mounted machinery.
  • Collaborate with our team of groundstaff to enable the smooth running of matchdays and non‑matchdays.
  • Perform tidying and litter picking, strimming and hedge cutting, and routine maintenance of turfcare machinery.
  • Maintain health and safety in the workplace and comply with company procedures and guidelines.
  • Perform any other duties consistent with grounds preparation at an industry‑leading sporting venue.
