Job summary

Arena Racing Company is seeking a dedicated maintenance role at Bath Racecourse to help maintain the racing surface year-round and care for external grounds. The candidate will work as part of a team, with some duties done independently, and support race days and events with presentation-ready areas.

The role involves practical outdoor work in variable weather, the use of tractors and maintenance equipment, and adherence to health and safety policies. Weekend and bank holiday hours are expected.

Responsibilities

• Carry out a maintenance programme for the course under the direction of the Clerk of the Course.
• Prepare the course for racing, including preparation and reinstatement before, during and after racing.
• Maintain lawn and garden areas and parade rings for racedays and events.
• Maintain external areas such as car parks, tracks, tarmac areas and horsebox park.
• Ensure external areas are free from weeds, rubbish and leaves.
• Use gardening, agricultural equipment, machinery, vehicles and chemicals in duties.
• Adhere to health and safety policies and procedures.
• Work unsocial hours including late evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
• Work well in a team and also use initiative when working alone.
• Collaborate closely with Clerk of Course and other officials such as the BHA.

Part of Arena Racing Company, Bath Racecourse received a multi-million pound redevelopment in 2016 that transformed the venue. The racecourse now has modern facilities that still give recognition to the history and heritage of the venue, purpose built to accommodate guests on race days as well as a multitude of events from weddings to conferences.

About the role

To assist in maintaining a quality racing surface all year round.Maintenance of the outside areas to the highest possible standard of presentation. To assist in the maintenance of estates buildings and equipment as well as assisting in the operational aspects of Racedays and Events.

This is a challenging yet rewarding role for a motivated individual. Although part of a team, working with one’s own initiative is vital in delivering the responsibilities within this role.

1. Under the direction of the Clerk of the Course, carry out a maintenance programme for the course. The work entails working outside in changing and often inclement weather conditions and can be physically demanding.
2. To assist in preparing the course for racing – to include preparation and reinstatement of the course before, after and during racing, this to include:- Use of tractors, machinery and all weather maintenance equipment as required.
3. Maintain all lawn and garden areas and parade rings with particular attention to raceday and event presentation.
4. General maintenance of external areas, to include car parks, tracks, tarmac areas and horsebox park.
5. Ensure all external areas are free from weeds, rubbish and leaves.
6. You will be required to use various gardening, agricultural equipment, machinery, vehicles and chemicals in the process of carrying out your duties.
7. Abide by all regulations and safe working practices in accordance with current legislation and as detailed in the Company’s Health and Safety Policy and Procedures
8. Due to the nature of this role, working unsocial hours will be a frequent occurrence, including late evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays.
9. Work Well in a team and have initiative to work by yourself.
10. Working closely with Clerk of Course and other officials such as BHA.
