Job summary

Mears Group PLC is seeking a reliable Groundworker for a permanent, full-time position in Rainham (London area). You will perform external works, paving, fencing, drainage, and concrete tasks for social housing properties, often around occupied homes, while ensuring safety and quality standards.

The role requires independence, strong fault-finding skills, and excellent customer service. A company van, fuel card, and uniform are provided, with a supportive team and opportunities to contribute to

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in domestic repairs and maintenance as a groundworker.
  • Full UK driving licence is essential.
  • Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent customer service, especially in occupied homes.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out external repairs and maintenance across social housing properties.
  • Install and repair paving, slabs, and pathways.
  • Erect and maintain fencing, gates, and boundary structures.
  • Undertake drainage works including gulley clearing and pipe repairs.
  • Mix and lay concrete for footings, bases, and hard standings.
  • Record job details using handheld devices or job sheets.
  • Work around occupied homes, maintaining safety and cleanliness.

Job description

Contract: Permanent, Full-time

Salary: £35,385.84 per annum, plus, company van & fuel card

Hours: Monday to Friday, 42.5 hours, 8:00am-5:00pm

Location: Rainham - London

We’re looking for a reliable and experienced Groundworker to join our expanding team, supporting a busy social housing contract in Rainham. This is a hands-on role focused on delivering essential external works and repairs across residential properties, helping maintain safe, functional, and well-presented outdoor environments for tenants. You’ll be responsible for a variety of tasks including paving, fencing, drainage, concreting, and general groundwork repairs. Working in and around occupied homes, you’ll need to be professional, respectful, and committed to delivering high-quality work that meets both safety and service standards. With a strong pipeline of work and a focus on improving housing conditions, this is a great opportunity to be part of a team making a real impact in the community. We’re looking for someone dependable, skilled across a range of groundworks, and confident working independently or as part of a team.

Duties

  • Carry out external repairs and maintenance across social housing properties
  • Install and repair paving, slabs, and pathways
  • Erect and maintain fencing, gates, and boundary structures
  • Undertake drainage works including gulley clearing, pipe repairs, and soakaway installations
  • Mix and lay concrete for footings, bases, and hard standings
  • Carry out minor brickwork and reinstatement works as required
  • Ensure all work complies with health and safety regulations and site standards
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicle in good working order
  • Work respectfully in and around occupied homes, maintaining a clean and safe environment
  • Record job details, materials used, and completion notes using handheld devices or job sheets
  • Identify and report any additional works, safeguarding concerns, or property issues
  • Participate in the out-of-hours emergency rota when required
  • Adhere to all health and safety policies and procedures
  • Provided high levels of customer care at all times

Role Criteria

  • Proven experience in domestic repairs and maintenance in a ground worker position
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent customer service skills, with experience working in occupied homes
  • Good understanding of health and safety regulations and safe working practices
  • Ability to use handheld devices or job management systems to record work
  • Willingness to participate in out-of-hours emergency rota
