Ground Segment Software Test and Commissioning Engineer - You will collaborate with other teams in testing, commissioning, and integrating control room software with Ground Segment and Launch Vehicle systems. This is an exciting role in a fast-paced environment, with training provided, offering a unique opportunity to contribute directly to launch operations for Orbex Prime.

While training will be provided, it is expected that you have a strong technical foundation in commissioning complex software systems, including controls and automation, Linux, networking infrastructure, communication protocols (UDP/TCP), and command line coding. The role involves prolonged periods working at our spaceport on the Shetland Isles. Orbex is a leading micro-launch company preparing for launch from Scotland, with significant project financing, signed customers, and backing from UKSA and ESA.

Our company is rapidly growing, with staff in Forres, Scotland, and Copenhagen, Denmark. We work on cutting-edge rocket fuel technology, with Prime’s carbon footprint being up to 96% lower than comparable vehicles, and innovations in propulsion, tank structures, and reusability. You will gain unique insight into building new launch vehicles for a growing commercial market.

The role includes tasks such as:

  1. Supporting testing of Ground Software through high-level testing of User Interface applications.
  2. Collaborating with teams to integrate software into test and launch facilities.
  3. Commissioning, configuring, and maintaining hardware and software at these facilities.
  4. Fault tracing and reporting software issues.
  5. Monitoring hardware/software and supporting during tests and launches.
  6. Maintaining accurate records of hardware/software configurations.
  7. Participating in Orbex health and safety culture.

Key qualifications and experience include:

  • Practical experience in maintaining industrial or IT systems.
  • No specific qualifications required, but experience with networking, hardware, and industrial IT support is essential.
  • Experience with mission-critical software (aerospace, medical, defense, oil & gas).
  • Proficiency with Linux, communication protocols, CLI, and network configuration.
  • Supportive interpersonal skills and experience supporting users.
  • Familiarity with version control systems like GIT or SVN.
  • A full manual driving license without endorsements.
  • Ability to work remotely and as part of a team, taking initiative and communicating openly.

The role is initially based in Forres, with subsequent travel to Unst (Saxa Vord Spaceport) and prolonged stays on Shetland. The location offers scenic outdoor pursuits and a vibrant natural environment. Security clearance (CTC) is required, and candidates must be UK or European citizens or from countries signatory to the MTCR convention.

Benefits include a UK salary of £45-55k, 34 days holiday, pension, cycle scheme, employee assistance, life insurance, and relocation support, including accommodation and allowances.
