Job description

Buckingham Futures are currently supporting a Local Authority client in Essex in the recruitment of an experienced Green Space Development Manager for a 6–12 month assignment. Please see full details below:

Role: Green Space Development Manager
Contract: Temporary (up to 12 months)
Rate: £475 per day (umbrella, inside IR35)
Location:Essex (on-site 3 days per week)
Closing Date: 15th August 2025

Overview:

Essex is looking for a forward-thinking and experienced Green Space Development Manager to lead the strategic development and management of its green infrastructure – including parks, woodlands, cemeteries, biodiversity, and community green assets.

This senior-level role will oversee capital projects, staff management, volunteer coordination, and stakeholder partnerships – playing a key role in enhancing the borough’s green and open spaces while supporting long-term environmental goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Green Space team and associated contractors
  • Oversee a wide-ranging portfolio: parks, trees, cemeteries, biodiversity, and drainage
  • Deliver strategies and policies aligned with Council objectives
  • Secure and manage external funding and capital project delivery
  • Supervise budgets, performance, and compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Champion community engagement and environmental sustainability
  • Represent the Council in public forums and partnership meetings

What You’ll Bring:

  • Strong background in horticulture, ecology, arboriculture, or environmental services
  • Proven experience managing parks, nature reserves, and green spaces to high standards
  • Knowledge of sustainable land management and climate-resilient planting
  • Leadership experience with both in-house teams and external contractors
  • Skilled in project delivery, budget management, and stakeholder engagement
