About the role

We’re looking for talented engineering graduates to help us transition to a greener energy future. This immersive, paid experience provides in-depth understanding of substation engineering through diverse projects, from project planning to commissioning.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Testing equipment, safety, protection, and control systems; substation refurbishment; technical support; fault diagnosis
  • Supporting Operations Managers and team members on projects
  • Developing into a Project Leader, ensuring timely and budget-compliant delivery
  • Leading safety and risk assessments, toolbox talks, and site activities
  • Monitoring and reviewing contracts and contractor work
  • Ensuring site safety and compliance with CDM regulations
  • Driving continuous improvement and industry best practices

About you

You will:

  • Gain expertise in testing, safety, protection, and maintenance of substations
  • Proactively communicate to keep projects on track
  • Develop skills in plant and equipment management, fault investigation, and safety implementation
  • Provide engineering leadership for HVDC/AC assets and strategic projects

After two years, you will qualify for a full-time Substation Engineer role. Your decisions will impact electricity transmission across England and Wales, supporting renewable energy integration and system reliability.

Requirements

Minimum 2:2 degree in electrical principles, such as electrical engineering, power systems, or electronics. Valid UK driving license required.

Location

Based in West London, with travel across the region. Must reside within 30 minutes of postcode KT15 3LA.

Application Details

We recruit on a rolling basis; early applications are encouraged. Assessment centres are scheduled for WC 30th September 2024 in Eakring, Nottinghamshire. Successful candidates start in January 2025.

Benefits

Starting salary: £33,154 (Bachelor’s) or £34,360 (Master’s). Includes a £2,000 bonus, holiday entitlement, a £2,400 completion payment, cost of living allowance, pension, share schemes, flexible benefits, mentorship, and professional accreditation.
