Job Description:

About us

National Grid is at the heart of the energy future, and our people are at the heart of National Grid. We’re 30,000 colleagues strong. In the UK, National Grid doesn’t generate or sell energy – we connect the dots to get energy from A to B. From making a cup of tea in the morning to keeping the lights on in hospitals, our electricity network puts power in the hands of people. Without it, the world as we know it would grind to a halt.

The world of energy is changing rapidly as we focus on building a cleaner, greener future. Working at National Grid, you’ll touch the lives of almost everyone in the UK and shape how we use and consume energy for generations to come.

Our values and principles

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to who we are and what we do. We encourage applications from all backgrounds and communities and are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments you require.

About the role

As owners of Wales and England’s electricity transmission network, we’re leading the energy transition. We seek bright engineering graduates to help us move towards a greener energy future.

We offer a unique, immersive experience to give you an in-depth understanding of substation engineering while being paid. You will work on various projects and collaborate with diverse teams from project planning to commissioning.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Testing equipment, safety, protection, and control systems; substation refurbishment and maintenance; technical support; problem diagnosis; fault fixing
  • Supporting your Operations Manager and team during projects
  • Developing into a Project Leader to ensure successful delivery of work packages within budget and schedule
  • Leading safety and risk assessments, method statements, and toolbox talks
  • Monitoring contracts and work undertaken by contractors
  • Managing site activities and safety compliance as per CDM regulations
  • Undertaking training to meet National Grid’s safety standards
  • Driving continuous improvement through industry collaboration

About you

You will:

  • Gain expertise in testing, safety, protection, and control of electrical systems
  • Proactively manage work programs and communicate effectively with team leaders
  • Develop skills in maintenance, project delivery, fault investigation, and safety monitoring
  • Provide engineering leadership for operational HVDC/AC assets and strategic projects

After two years, you will qualify for a full-time Substation Engineer role.

This position impacts the transmission of electricity across England and Wales for decades, involving maintenance, asset refurbishment, fault repair, and integration of renewable energy sources.

Some graduates will be responsible for commissioning new equipment and ensuring co-worker safety.

Requirements

You need at least a 2:2 degree in electrical principles, such as electrical engineering, power systems, or electronics. A full UK driving license is essential.

Location

Based in the North West, with travel across the region. You must live within 30 minutes of postcode M31 4BH.

Application deadline

We recruit on a rolling basis. Apply early. Assessment centers are scheduled for the week of 30th September 2024 in Eakring, Nottinghamshire. Successful applicants will start in January 2025.

What you'll get

Starting salary: £33,154 (Bachelor’s) or £34,360 (Master’s). Benefits include a £2,000 bonus, 26 days holiday, a £2,400 completion bonus, cost of living allowance (where applicable), pension, share schemes, flexible benefits, mentorship, and professional accreditation. You will also have opportunities for personal development and career growth.
