Job summary

TipTopJob in Newport is seeking a motivated Graduate Quantity Surveyor to join a professional construction team. You will support cost planning, procurement, contract administration, valuations and financial reporting across the full project lifecycle, gaining practical experience from experienced QS and PMs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction Management or related discipline.
  • Understanding of Quantity Surveying principles and construction costs.
  • Interest in construction procurement and contract administration.
  • Interest in pursuing RICS accreditation or similar.
  • Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and manage workloads.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to analyse information and present findings clearly.
  • Confidence to build relationships with contractors, consultants, clients and colleagues.
  • Proactive and commercially aware approach.
  • Willingness to learn and build a career in QS.
  • Competence using Microsoft Office/M365.
  • Full UK driving licence for occasional travel.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with cost estimates, project budgets and cashflow forecasts.
  • Support development and maintenance of project cost plans and financial records.
  • Assist with measuring and quantifying construction works.
  • Maintain commercial records, cost reports and documentation.
  • Monitor expenditure against budgets.
  • Support procurement activities and tender processes.
  • Assist with contract administration and consultant appointments.
  • Support contract documentation preparation and maintenance.
  • Liaise with contractors, consultants and suppliers on commercial matters.
  • Understand NEC and JCT contract forms.
  • Support commercial management of projects with QS and PMs.
  • Attend site visits, progress meetings and reviews.
  • Monitor performance against cost and programme targets.
  • Manage variations, change control and compensation events.
  • Assist with valuations and final accounts.
  • Prepare financial reports and forecasts.
  • Identify and monitor commercial and project risks, and document commitments.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders and communicate commercial information.
  • Assist in identifying and monitoring risks.

About The Role

We are looking for a motivated and commercially minded Graduate Quantity Surveyor to join a professional construction team in Newport.

Newport

Working Hours: 37 hours per week

Salary: Up to A GBP 36,581 per annum

Contract: Permanent

Working alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers, you will gain practical experience across the full construction project lifecycle, supporting with cost planning, procurement, contract administration, valuations and financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the preparation of cost estimates, project budgets and cashflow forecasts.
  • Support the development and maintenance of project cost plans and financial records.
  • Assist with measuring and quantifying construction works.
  • Maintain accurate commercial records, cost reports and project documentation.
  • Monitor project expenditure against approved budgets.
  • Support procurement activities, including preparing tender documentation, obtaining quotations and evaluating submissions.
  • Assist with the administration of construction contracts and consultant appointments.
  • Support the preparation and maintenance of contract documentation.
  • Liaise with contractors, consultants and suppliers regarding commercial matters.
  • Develop an understanding of construction contract forms, including NEC and JCT.
  • Support Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers with the commercial management of construction projects.
  • Attend site visits, progress meetings and project reviews as required.
  • Assist with monitoring project performance against cost and programme targets.
  • Support the management of variations, change control and compensation events.
  • Assist with project valuations and final accounts.
  • Prepare financial reports, cost updates and expenditure forecasts.
  • Assist with identifying emerging commercial risks and maintaining accurate records of project commitments and expenditure.
  • Build positive working relationships with contractors, consultants, clients and internal teams.
  • Support meetings, reporting and communication of commercial information to stakeholders.
  • Assist with identifying and monitoring commercial and project risks.
  • Ensure work is carried out in accordance with relevant policies, procedures and statutory requirements.
About You
  • A Bachelors degree or equivalent in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction Management or a related discipline.
  • An understanding of Quantity Surveying principles and construction costs.
  • An interest in developing knowledge of construction procurement and contract administration.
  • An interest in working towards RICS accreditation or a similar professional qualification.
  • Strong numerical, analytical and problem:solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
