Transport for Greater Manchester seeks a UTC Engineer to contribute to exciting transport projects, including cycling initiatives and public transit systems. Candidates will develop their engineering skills through hands-on experience and collaboration with experienced teams, working towards the organisation's strategic goals while enjoying benefits such as flexible working and free travel within Greater Manchester.
Job Description
Would you like the opportunity to help people travel safely and easily by all modes of transport across Greater Manchester? Are you seeking a new challenge in highway engineering whilst also progressing your career?
As a UTC Engineer, you will be involved in many exciting projects, including cycling and walking initiatives and public transport projects (such as the Greater Manchester Bee Network and Quality Bus Transit), as well as helping to deliver TfGM's vision as set out in our 2040 Strategy. You will also be involved in designing and implementing adaptive signal networks and will work alongside experienced Urban Traffic Control Engineers, allowing you to develop in your role.
Occasionally, you will also be required to work out of office hours including at weekends to help manage traffic at events. This is a hybrid role where you will be expected to work in the office 2 days per week.
Greater Manchester is embarking on an exciting period of transition and evolving with a growing population and economy. Transport for Greater Manchester manages the largest number of traffic signals outside London.
The challenge of managing such a large conurbation offers the opportunity to gain a wide breadth of experience. The Infrastructure Design Group (IDG) team is responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of traffic signal installations across Greater Manchester. They work closely with a variety of organisations, including local authorities, walking and cycling groups, bus operators, tram operators, and many more. In this team, you would contribute to the geometric design of new and existing traffic signal-controlled junctions and develop design solutions at junctions that cater for all transport modes, including walking and cycling.
The Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) team manages the operation of the traffic signals across Greater Manchester. They formulate plans for day-to-day operation and develop strategic plans for events such as football matches at the Etihad and Old Trafford Stadiums, large concerts, and roadwork schemes. The ITS team also carries out junction modelling, working closely with the IDG team to develop innovative signal solutions.
The team also provides advice to the districts of Greater Manchester regarding development proposals.
What you do and how you do it is important – whatever role you work in at TfGM – and even small behaviours and actions can have a big impact. At TfGM, our behaviours bring to life our values of Deliver, Care, and Adapt.
You will be keen to develop your knowledge of traffic and transportation principles and have experience using computer systems for data related to modelling. You will have an enquiring mind with the ability to use numbers and data to analyse and provide solutions to complex problems, and create reports with the flexibility to adapt to changing workload demands and organisational challenges.
You will also have a degree, MSc, BTEC, HND, or HNC in an engineering discipline, science, maths, geography, or similar.
We have 3 permanent opportunities for talented graduates, as well as more experienced traffic engineers, to gain experience and develop within our Highways teams, whether that be our Infrastructure Design Group (IDG) or Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).
This is a career graded role, with a salary for this role ranging from £33,955 to £38,723 per annum for entry at Graduate Level 1, and £40,650 to £45,107 for more experienced candidates entering at Engineer Level 2, depending on skills and experience.
