Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Graduate Highway Engineer to join our highways team in the UK. You will be supported by experienced engineers, receive structured training, and develop skills in highway design, digital engineering, and BIM processes across live projects.

As you grow, you will take on increasing responsibility, attend site visits and workshops, and contribute to feasibility studies, technical drawings, reports and specifications for a range of urban and rural schemes and active travel projects.

Qualifications

• BEng in Civil or General Engineering with 2:1 or above.
• MEng in Civil or General Engineering with 2:1 is advantageous.
• Modules or experience in highways, infrastructure or transportation is beneficial.
• Enthusiastic, hard-working and technically proficient with ambition.
• Good report writing and technical communication skills beneficial.
• Ability to structure and prioritise work with the wider team.
• Ability to work in a team and independently with initiative.
• Good communication to present technical information clearly.
• Willingness to pursue professional accreditation or chartership.

Responsibilities

• Support the development of highway designs and technical solutions through project stages.
• Attend site visits, meetings and workshops, and collaborate with clients and design professionals.
• Learn and apply AutoCAD, Civil 3D and other highway design and modelling software.
• Develop understanding of digital engineering and BIM processes for infrastructure delivery.
• Take on increasing responsibility for project tasks and deliverables as experience grows.
• Contribute to projects from inception to completion across a range of schemes.

Job description

As a Graduate Highway Engineer , you'll be supported by experienced engineers who will provide guidance and mentoring as you develop your technical knowledge and professional skills. You'll work on live projects and receive structured training to help you build a strong foundation in highway engineering and infrastructure design. Your initial responsibilities will typically include supporting the development of highway designs and technical solutions through different project stages, attending site visits, meetings and workshops, and working collaboratively with clients and other design professionals. You'll receive training in relevant engineering, design and digital engineering software, which may include AutoCAD, Civil 3D and other highway design and modelling software, depending on project requirements. You'll also develop your understanding of digital engineering and BIM processes and how these are applied to the design and delivery of infrastructure projects. As your experience and confidence grow, you'll take on increasing responsibility for project tasks and technical deliverables, with opportunities to contribute to projects from inception through to completion. You may gain experience across a variety of projects, including:

• Highway and road design
• Geometric alignment and highway layout design
• Junction and intersection design
• Urban and rural highway schemes
• Active travel and cycle infrastructure
• Bus priority and public transport infrastructure
• Road drainage and associated infrastructure
• Earthworks and highway infrastructure
• Pavement design and maintenance
• Traffic management and temporary works
• Road safety and highway assessments
• Feasibility studies and options development
• Development of technical drawings, reports and specifications
• Construction-stage support and site inspections
• Multidisciplinary infrastructure and transportation projects

Our Highway Engineering graduates also have opportunities to work alongside our Traffic Engineering and Transportation teams on major infrastructure projects. Working collaboratively across different disciplines provides exposure to a broad range of projects and helps you develop a well-rounded understanding of transportation, highway design and infrastructure delivery.
