Job summary

Amey is seeking a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer to join our Consulting team in Belfast. You will work on meaningful infrastructure projects, learning from industry experts and developing practical skills from day one.

The role offers mentorship, a structured development pathway, and exposure to geotechnical assets across rail and highways, providing hands-on experience in desk studies, site investigations and design reporting.

Qualifications

• A degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering.
• Relevant postgraduate study (MEng, MSc or PhD) advantageous but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Produce desk studies to determine risk and suitable design solutions.
• Plan and supervise ground investigations.
• Carry out geotechnical asset inspections on major infrastructure in Rail and Highways sectors.
• Perform calculations and analysis to assess solutions.

About the Team

Our Geotechnical Practice delivers some of the UK’s most complex and high-profile infrastructure projects across Ireland, England and Wales. Working with clients such as National Highways, Network Rail, Transport for London, TransPennine Route Upgrade, Local Authorities, the Ministry of Defence and Welsh Government, we provide specialist geotechnical engineering services throughout the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and asset management through to design, construction support and post-construction assurance.

As part of Amey Consulting, our geotechnical specialists collaborate within a multidisciplinary environment alongside highways, rail, structures, geo-environmental, transport planning and drainage engineering teams. Supported by the wider Amey Group, we are uniquely positioned to deliver integrated infrastructure solutions that combine strategic advice, technical excellence and practical delivery.

Our portfolio spans geotechnical asset management, slope and earthwork engineering, retaining structures, foundations, ground investigation management, geohazard assessment and infrastructure resilience, providing graduates with the opportunity to work on diverse projects of regional, national and international significance while developing their skills alongside industry-leading experts.

What you’ll be doing

As a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer you will become proficient at investigating sites, understanding existing assets and using a broad range of geotechnical products and techniques to help keep the UK’s transport infrastructure in working order. This will be challenging, but our experienced engineers will be there to mentor and support you as you start your journey into geotechnical engineering.

You will work alongside the team to:

• Produce desk studies to determine risk and suitable solutions for design with safety first and foremost
• Plan and supervise ground investigations to inform geotechnical interventions
• Carry out geotechnical asset inspections on major infrastructure in Rail and Highways sectors
• Propose solutions to engineering problems and perform calculations and analysis to determine their suitability
• Prepare specifications, drawings and design reports
• Deliver multidisciplinary schemes in collaboration with colleagues from across the Amey Consulting Business

• A degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology. Relevant postgraduate study (MEng, MSc or PhD), industrial experience or placement experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
• A Full UK driving licence.
