Qualification - Environmental Health Degree BSc and/or MSc Qualification
Casual Car Documentation- The successful candidate will be a designated Casual Car User which means that car journeys may be necessary on an occasional basis, but are not essential to the role. If you do drive, you must always hold a full valid driving licence and provide your own car for use at work, as well as provide all the appropriate documentation. You will receive an allowance per mile of business use.
Greater Manchester’s public protection teams have secured funding from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority to ensure the continuation of the Greater Manchester Business Compliance Service. Its aim is to help businesses comply and thrive and will focus on the key regulatory areas of environmental health, trading standards and licensing. You will work alongside other new officers to provide a Business Compliance Service across Greater Manchester.
Your role will involve proactively contacting and providing a signposting service for new and existing businesses to help them navigate their compliance issues and questions.
During the course of this fixed-term contract, we will provide you with the opportunity to work alongside our experienced environmental health officers to achieve your qualification as an Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP). With a clear focus on food within the regulatory area of environmental health, we will aim for you to provide a range of free and chargeable services once you are deemed competent. You will be given the freedom to identify, create and deliver your own mini projects to help solve business compliance problems in your local authority. With your hard work, we will continue to provide a sustainable new service that works for Greater Manchester businesses.
The contract funding is for a 12 month fixed term contract. It is hoped that further funding will be in place to continue the post up to 30th September 2026 but this cannot yet be guaranteed.
You will work within the Greater Manchester business compliance service 2 days a week, which is based at Manchester Town Hall Extension. You will also work within our Food & Health & Safety Team 3 days a week, alongside experienced environmental health officers to help you achieve your qualification/competencies and get the real-world experience you need for a career in environmental health. During your time in our team as you develop your competencies you will be given service requests/complaints to deal with. You may also be provided with food business inspections to complete and to support Officers with the wide range of work that we deal with. This will all help to support your development. The ideal candidate will be passionate and excited about joining and shaping our new service and enthusiastic about keeping the public safe by helping businesses comply. An environmental health graduate or postgraduate, you will be willing to bring and implement fresh ideas to the service and work alongside our business compliance trainee apprentices.
You must hold an Environmental Health Degree (BSc) or Master’s Degree (MSc) and have a willingness to work towards a range of food safety competencies set out in the Food Law Code of Practice. Support will be provided to candidates to enroll to complete a professional qualification leading to CIEH Registered Environmental Health Practitioner status. You will be provided with the opportunity to gain experience in all Environmental Health disciplines so you can write up your portfolio. The CIEH fees related to registering for your portfolio will be paid for. You will be supported to complete relevant FH and FS competencies following the FSA’s competency framework.
You will be open to meeting people from a range of different backgrounds and visiting them in their businesses as well as speaking to them over the phone. You will therefore be expected to have good communication skills and excellent telephone manners, with an eagerness to learn.
