Job summary

BEAR Scotland is inviting graduates in Civil or Structural Engineering to join our North West and South East teams. You’ll gain hands-on experience across bridges, highways maintenance, asset management and project delivery, while developing technical, commercial and project-management skills for a successful engineering career.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Genuine interest in highways, bridges, structures and transport infrastructure.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt within a large multi-disciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting inspection, maintenance and improvement of bridges, structures and trunk roads.
  • Assisting with delivery of engineering projects from planning and design through to construction.
  • Undertaking site visits and condition surveys to identify engineering solutions.
  • Preparing technical reports, specifications and risk assessments.
  • Supporting project programmes, budgets and stakeholder communications.
  • Contributing to safe delivery and adhering to CDM and health & safety requirements.

Graduate Engineers – Civil & Structural Engineering

At BEAR Scotland, we manage, maintain and improve over 1,962km of Scotland’s trunk road network and more than 2,000 bridges and structures across some of the country’s most iconic and challenging landscapes. Every year, we deliver multi-million-pound programmes of maintenance, renewal and improvement works that keep Scotland connected and moving safely.

We’re looking for enthusiastic and ambitious graduates in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline to join our North West and South East teams. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on critical transport infrastructure projects while developing the technical, commercial and project management skills needed for a successful engineering career.

As a Graduate Engineer, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers across a variety of teams, gaining valuable exposure to bridge and highway maintenance, asset management, project delivery and construction activities. You’ll also benefit from structured training, mentoring and support towards professional accreditation and chartership.

Responsibilities and Activities:

  • Supporting the inspection, maintenance and improvement of bridges, structures and trunk roads across Scotland’s strategic road network.
  • Assisting with the delivery of engineering projects from planning and design through to construction and completion.
  • Undertaking site visits, condition inspections and surveys to help identify and assess engineering solutions.
  • Preparing technical reports, specifications, risk assessments and project documentation.
  • Supporting the management of project programmes, budgets and costs.
  • Working collaboratively with contractors, local authorities, clients and other stakeholders.
  • Assisting in fulfilling Designer duties in accordance with CDM Regulations and health and safety requirements.
  • Contributing to the safe and efficient delivery of winter maintenance and emergency response activities when required.
  • Learning from experienced engineers and participating in BEAR’s Graduate Development Programme.
  • Working towards a professional qualification and chartered status with support from the business.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
  • A genuine interest in highways, bridges, structures and transport infrastructure.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Ambition to progress towards ICE, IStructE or other relevant professional accreditation.
  • Experience using engineering or design software would be advantageous.
  • A full UK driving licence.
