St Catherine's School in Guildford invites applications for Graduate Assistant Teachers who will work across the Senior and Prep Schools. The role is designed for graduates seeking a career in teaching, youth work, coaching or pastoral care, offering hands-on experience in a busy independent boarding school.
GATs support lessons, teach some classes under the Head of Department, participate in extra-curricular activities, and, as residents, join the boarding community with duties in the evenings
Graduate Assistant Teachers (GATs) play a central part in the life of St Catherine's, working across the Senior and Prep Schools and potentially as resident members of the Boarding Team. The role is designed for graduates considering a future in teaching, youth work, coaching or pastoral care, and offers a broad, hands‑on introduction to life in a busy independent boarding school.
Each GAT is linked to an academic department that matches their subject interests. They support lessons, teach some classes under the guidance of the Head of Department, and help with the supervision of pupils during the school day. Alongside this, GATs contribute to an extra‑curricular area such as Sport, Drama or Music, according to their skills and enthusiasm.
As residents in staff accommodation, GATs are an integral part of the boarding community. They work one full evening duty a week in a designated boarding house and one weekend in four. They also help with house activities, weekend fixtures and, from time to time, trips and evening events. Safeguarding is at the heart of everything they do.
GATs receive a full induction, including mandatory Safeguarding training, and are supported by the Deputy Heads and Heads of House throughout. It is a demanding but rewarding year that gives a genuine insight into the teaching profession, with plenty of opportunity to grow in confidence and experience.
