Job summary

Ambrose Avenue Group Practice is excited to offer an excellent opportunity for a General Practice Assistant (GPA) to join our team on a full-time basis. The role consists of 37.5 hours per week spread over five days, although part-time applications will also be considered.

Main duties of the job

Administrative Support:

  • Sort clinical correspondence, prioritise actions, coordinate referrals, and schedule tests and follow-up appointments.
  • Redirect some correspondence to other professionals, such as clinical pharmacists.
  • Extract key information from letters, accurately code patient data, and update records.
  • Complete basic forms and essential elements of various documents for GP approval, such as insurance forms, mortgage applications, and benefits agency forms.
  • Manage workflow and prioritise key tasks to help free up GP time.
  • Arrange appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-up appointments for patients.

Basic Clinical Tasks:

  • Assist with blood pressure checks, urine dipstick testing, ECGs, phlebotomy, and more.
  • Support GPs during immunization sessions or wound care.
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients regarding procedures and care.

Coordination and Liaison:

  • Act as an important link between GPs, other clinicians, external agencies, and patients.
  • Ensure seamless patient care by collaborating with hospital teams, social services, and community providers.

Patient-Centred Care:

  • Treat every patient with respect, kindness, and confidentiality.
  • Guide patients to the most appropriate services or support within the Primary Care Network (PCN).

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience in an administrative or healthcare role (experience in a GP surgery or primary care is highly desirable).
  • Knowledge of patient confidentiality, data protection, and safeguarding principles.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Willingness to undertake or already possess a GP Assistant Certificate (or equivalent).
  • A commitment to teamwork and the ability to work independently.
  • Full UK driving license (for travel between sites, if needed).
  • Flexibility to adapt to the evolving needs of primary care.

Desirable

  • Competency in basic clinical tasks such as phlebotomy and ECG.
  • Familiarity with GP software systems (e.g., SystmOne).
  • Understanding of the Quality Outcome Framework (QoF) and Investment and Impact Framework (IIF).
