Job summary

Leicester City Council is recruiting a part-time Governor Support Officer to provide clerking support to governing boards and offer governance advice. You will plan and organise meetings, maintain records, and work with school leaders to ensure statutory duties are met.

Hybrid working is available, with flexible hours to suit board demands. Training accredited by the Chartered Governance Institute is provided.

Qualifications

  • Excellent planning and organisational skills to meet statutory timescales.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to undertake training for the role.

Responsibilities

  • Provide governance clerking support to schools and guidance to governing boards to meet statutory duties.
  • Plan, prepare and organise meetings and hearings so governors receive timely information for effective use of time.
  • Maintain comprehensive governing board records including minutes, reports and training records with data protection in mind.
  • Build strong working relationships with the Chair, Headteacher and board members across assigned schools.
  • Flexibility to attend meetings outside normal hours and work in a hybrid setup to manage workloads.

Part Time / 18.5 Hours Per Week / Fixed Term for 12 months due to funding All maintained schools report to a governing board, the governing board acts as the school's critical friend and makes strategic decisions that ensure the school is well led, financially stable, legally compliant and focused on delivering the best outcomes for pupils. All governing boards are supported by a governance professional who will ensure that schools meet their statutory duties. The Governor Services team offers this support many schools across Leicester City, whilst also providing professional advice and guidance to governing boards, headteachers and schools. The role of the Governor Support Officer is instrumental in guiding supporting governing boards and ensuring that they meet their statutory duties. Training that is Accredited by the Chartered Governance Institute is available.

What You'll Be Doing

As a governance professional, administrative and professional clerking support to schools and provide efficient governance advice governing boards to ensure statutory duties are met. You will plan, prepare and organise meetings and hearings ensuring governors receive the information they need in a timely manner to allow the board to make effective use of their time and focus on strategic matters.

You will be able to work under your own initiative, manage deadlines and be responsible for maintaining comprehensive governing board records, including governing board minutes and reports and full governing board membership and training records in accordance with data protection, freedom of information and school governance regulations with the ability to remain impartial and respect confidentiality at all times.

You will work closely with a number of schools and establish strong working relationships with the Chair of the Board, the Headteacher and the Board members of your assigned schools, your aim being to establish a relationship based on mutual respect and trust.

Working with governing boards may require attendance at meetings that are out of the normal office hours and therefore you will be given the flexibility to complete your hours in order to meet the demand of the governing board. You will have the flexibility of hybrid working in order to support you in managing your workloads.
