Job Description
We are an international organisation operating in Denmark, Poland, Norway, France, Bulgaria and the UK. We exist to advocate for animals and we do this by shaping public opinion, improving industry practices, and advancing animal protection laws.
If you love organising data, enjoy building relationships and can imagine finding joy in helping people help animals, then this position could be the perfect match for you.
We’re looking for someone to take on the responsibility of one of the pillars of our international organisation – fundraising. It is a vital part of organisation building, designed to make it easy for normal people to make a difference in the lives of animals by supporting effective organisations who fight for them.
This role will largely be based on marketing, data organisation and relationship building and will sit in the international side of our operations, so in our global team as opposed to in one country. You will be responsible for developing our international fundraising area of work, including day to day grant and donor management, as well as identifying new opportunities and strategies we should be pursuing.
Before we go any further, let’s be clear about what we mean when we say ‘fundraising’.
In Anima International, we think of fundraising as any activity that can help and encourage people to support our animal advocacy work.
Obtaining a donation is just one step, and what really matters is creating a lasting relationship with people who also want to change the world.
Fundraising evokes many associations. Some may imagine a group of volunteers standing with collection boxes on the streets, phone calls encouraging donations to an organization, or clothing and food donation events. These associations, while correct, do not reflect the full spectrum of fundraising activities nor its true focus – creating relationships with people.
As part of this role, you will search for tools, solutions, and opportunities to reach different groups of people in order to acquire new donors and grants. At the same time, you will work on building relationships with current donors and philanthropic foundations who believe in Anima International’s mission – creating a world free from animal suffering.
We can adapt to you
Due to the wide scope of our work, there is no simple description of the ideal employee. Perhaps there are some areas in which you are stronger than others, and we are open to adapting this position to some extent to fit you. However, there are certain traits that are a must:
- You must be a highly conscientious person who enjoys getting stuck in to hard work
- You must have strong organisational skills and be someone who is not afraid of using data
- You must love people, enjoy talking to them and be able to find common ground with anyone. Basically, you should be the type of person who loves talking to people in the elevator.
- You must have a naturally high tolerance for rejection.
- Finally, you must either already have a passion for fundraising or be truly excited to take a deep dive down that rabbit hole
No previous experience is required for this role. While experience will be valued (and reflected in the salary), we welcome applications from both seasoned professionals and passionate newcomers who align with our organisational culture.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement Anima International’s fundraising strategy – you will be the main person responsible for creating our international fundraising strategy, from having the vision to creating the strategy and then putting it into practice.
- Produce fundraising and donor management content – you will be responsible for creating social media assets, newsletters, communications and other content, as well as developing the thinking behind those activities.
- Organise fundraising work – you will help us keep track of our work with philanthropic foundations, major donors and individual supporters.
- Strengthen our international supporter base – you will help build our base of supporters, our brand and work to turn supporters into engaged donors.
- Draft grant requests – as well as organising grant requests for our six national organisations and international work, you will help draft our submissions, renewals and check-ins.
- Identify new funding sources and opportunities – you will find new chances for like-minded supporters and philanthropic foundations to support our work.
- Build relationships – you will be one of the main points of contact for philanthropic foundations, and so responsible for creating strong relationships with them.
- Build culture – you will help build and reinforce our culture, so we never lose what makes Anima International strong.
- Embrace reality – you will make it your mission to understand the world as it is, rather than as you would like it to be.
- Experience frustration – you will feel frustrated about things you could do better or things that are not working in the organisation or your team, and use this frustration as an opportunity to refine and elevate our organisation.
- Question ideas – you will question common knowledge, especially your own ideas, so that our results are always as good as they can be.
- Optimise your performance – you will obsess about the effectiveness and efficiency of your work, and seek ways to improve it, such as by using artificial intelligence and other tools.
- Deepen your knowledge – you will enjoy continuously deepening your knowledge – both about particular areas of animal advocacy and about how the world works.
- Prioritise action – you will act even when there is insufficient data.
- Abandon projects – you will change your objectives when it makes sense, no matter the time already invested.

Role Requirements
- Strong belief in the mission of our organisation. Working for us should not be thought of as a ‘career step’. We want people who are motivated by our mission above all.
- Fluency in English. Fluency in another European language will be an asset but is not required.
- Flexible availability. Offering you great flexibility in terms of working hours, we need the same flexibility from you. We think of ourselves as a small startup. The success of the organisation rests on a handful of highly motivated advocates who want to do something ambitious with their lives. You must be comfortable working full-time (40 hours / week), part of which may take place during non-standard hours or weekends to accommodate differences in time zones, volunteer activists’ operating hours, and unexpected events. This means that if you are just starting your studies or have other significant commitments, it will probably be difficult for you to meet our requirements for full-time work and flexible availability.
- Ability to travel occasionally. We work remotely and so we don’t often get the chance to see our colleagues in person. To remedy that, we hold team gatherings, organization-wide summits and participate in conferences together. We see these meetings as an important part of our work and a way to build a strong organization. Such trips usually take from 3 to 4 days. The specific amount and frequency of travel required depend on one’s role. In this position, you will be traveling 1-2 times per quarter on average.
- Not being an asshole. We expect you to treat others with respect, decency and compassion – even the occasional adversaries.
- A preference for hard work. Activism is our passion and one of the main motivations in life. Importantly, the salary you will receive comes from donors who trust us to carefully and responsibly fulfill our promises. To fit our culture, you have to be a person who is proactive and enjoys work.
- Growth mindset. Nobody knows how to fix the world, so we need you to keep learning. We constantly strive to be better at our activism, but also as people.
- Strong interest in a high-feedback culture. We have a culture of honest and direct communication. We talk openly about our strengths and weaknesses on a daily basis because we want to be the best. You will know what your colleagues really think of you and be encouraged to speak your mind.
- Ability to reason and communicate your thinking, especially in written form. In order to thrive in our organization, you must be able to think carefully, try to back up your ideas with reasonable evidence, and above all be open to being proven wrong and changing your mind.
- Ability and desire to solve problems independently. Working with us comes with a lot of autonomy, and responsibility. You will seek and test new solutions and tools, take on challenges, and face problems no one in the organization has encountered before. That’s why we are looking for someone eager to deep-dive into important fundraising and donor management issues on their own, to understand and solve them.
- Ability to work effectively within a team. A lot of autonomy does not equal working alone. We treat Anima International as one efficiently functioning organism, and we collaborate extensively across teams. We believe that we can achieve more by working together, rather than as individuals. Such an approach requires the ability to prioritize the organisation and its mission above one’s ego, and “we” above “I”.
- Excellent communication skills. An ability to present our work, strategy and vision in a clear and compelling way is fundamental for this position. You will be constantly putting this skill to use – from conversations with individual donors, to drafting reports for our biggest supporters.
- Interpersonal and relationship building skills. Whether with donors, foundations, or individual supporters, your role will require you to build strong relationships with the people who support our work. Ideally, you will be someone who truly enjoys creating links with people.
- Basic-level data analysis skills (or willingness to develop in this area). Data – both quantitative and qualitative – is one of our most important sources of information, allowing us to better understand the world. Your role will require you to organize, store and interpret all sorts of data to inform our decisions and fundraising strategies.
You do not need to be vegan or vegetarian. While all of our events provide only plant-based meals, we are open to anyone who wants to fight for a world that is free from animal suffering.
