This is a world-class DevOps and GitOps engineering management challenge, bringing together operations management, software engineering, product development, and team leadership in a single high-value role.

Our mission is to pioneer and prove new and better approaches to large-scale IS. We support Canonical and Ubuntu operations, and help shape Canonical's managed application service offerings, raising the bar on DevOps and cloud-native operations. We advance infra-as-code, trailblazing towards next-generation model-driven operations. Our goal is to automate every process underpinning our business, sharing automation as open source packages for others to utilize.

We work across the full stack—from bare metal to Kubernetes, including cloud and virtualization. Our infrastructure scope spans public cloud, private cloud, and edge environments.

Our teams are fully distributed and home-based across EMEA, APAC, and the Americas. You will lead a team in your time zone and report to a global director, who may be in a different time zone.

Your role as GitOps Manager

You should be a Linux and operations expert and a capable manager to lead a high-performance team.

The IS team at Canonical manages services used by over 60 million Ubuntu users. We automate all production services, adopting model-driven operations, and contribute operational knowledge as reusable software packages.

From Kubernetes to the kernel, you'll work with cutting-edge technologies in a fast-paced environment. As an SRE Manager, you'll oversee operations engineers in your time zone, managing customer service, managed services, and product improvements. Collaboration with internal teams and customers is essential.

What your day will look like

  • Lead your team in daily agile DevOps practices
  • Represent the IS team to stakeholders and customers
  • Coordinate and drive internal projects
  • Mentor engineers to enhance their skills
  • Monitor team health indicators
  • Implement structured engineering and operations processes
  • Prioritize focus on milestones and deliverables
  • Meet service level agreements globally
  • Deliver quality managed services timely

What we are looking for in you

  • A track record of exceeding expectations
  • Experience with infrastructure as code for software delivery
  • Managing DevOps teams for SaaS or similar services
  • Understanding testing methodologies and code quality
  • Technical aptitude for complex distributed systems
  • Experience with cloud topologies and technologies
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events
  • Strong academic background from high school and university

Additional skills that you might also bring

  • Ubuntu system administration experience
  • Agile development methodology experience
  • Experience managing distributed teams

What we offer you

We offer competitive compensation based on location, experience, and performance, reviewed annually. Benefits include a performance bonus, learning budget, recognition rewards, holiday leave, parental leave, Employee Assistance Programme, travel opportunities, and more.

  • Distributed work environment with biannual in-person team sprints
  • USD 2,000 annual learning and development budget
  • Annual compensation review
  • Recognition rewards
  • Holiday and parental leave
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Travel opportunities and upgrades for company events
