Job summary

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust in Taunton, United Kingdom, invites applications for a Consultant in Community Older Persons Mental Health Psychiatry. You will join an established Community Mental Health Team serving Taunton and West Somerset, providing expert assessment, treatment and leadership.

This permanent, full-time post offers visa sponsorship for eligible applicants, a competitive salary of £113,565–£150,569, and a structured professional development plan including SPAs.

Qualifications

• Medical degree and specialist psychiatric training.
• Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
• On GMC Specialist Register or eligible within six months of interview.
• Approved Clinician and Section 12 approvals, or eligible and willing to apply.
• At least three years of supervised ST4–ST6-equivalent training or CESR.
• Significant experience in older persons psychiatry in community settings.
• Understanding of Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and contribute to service development.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Commitment to CPD and peer supervision.
• MRCPsych / master's / training juniors desirable.
• NHS or comparable experience, leadership training, service improvement desirable.
• Satisfactory DBS checks.
• Visa sponsorship eligibility.

Responsibilities

• Provide specialist psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment for older adults in community settings.
• Join an established Community Mental Health Team covering Taunton and West Somerset.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary professionals to deliver patient-centered care.
• Act as Responsible Clinician for patients under Community Treatment Orders.
• Conduct Mental Health Act assessments, including Section 136 cases.
• Prepare Section 49 reports under the Mental Capacity Act when required.
• Provide clinical leadership and guidance to the mental health team.
• Coordinate with inpatient teams for safe transitions between hospital and community care.
• Contribute to service development and continuous improvements.
• Participate in supervision, case discussions and cross-cover with consultants.
• Follow Trust policies, job plans and financial management requirements.
