Job Description

This role based in Harrogate (or potentially Reading or Manchester) is for Coffey Geotechnics, a Tetra Tech Company. Coffey Geotechnics is a specialist consultancy providing geotechnical and engineering geological design services from offices in Harrogate, Manchester, and Reading (UK).

About the role:

We are seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join the Coffey Geotechnics team in Reading. The role involves both office-based design and site supervision work for a wide range of geotechnical projects, working with experienced colleagues both in Reading and across other Coffey Geotechnics offices.

The role entails working on projects requiring detailed design of geotechnical structures, ground investigation and earthworks design and specification, assessment of slope stability, settlement, and ground movement. Projects include permanent and temporary works for infrastructure projects nationally and internationally. Market sectors include Highway, Rail, Property, Water, Defence, and Energy.

Responsibilities:
  1. Undertake technical and non-technical tasks including fieldwork, data analysis, interpretation, presentation, and report writing.
  2. Contribute to project designs involving foundations, slopes, retaining walls, and assessments of existing structures, including remedial measures.
  3. Engage in personal and professional development.
  4. Provide guidance to junior team members within the oversight of senior colleagues.
  5. Plan, coordinate, and manage small work programs effectively.
  6. Contribute to project success and develop positive client and stakeholder relationships.
  7. Assist in proposal development and submission.
  8. Promote Coffey’s reputation in the market.
  9. Ensure confidentiality and compliance with policies and procedures.
  10. Prioritize safety for yourself and others.
  11. Contribute to technically complex projects and be willing to travel as required, including overseas work or client sites within the UK.
Essential Skills:
  • Enthusiasm and keen interest in geotechnical consultancy skills.
  • Basic theoretical knowledge of geotechnical engineering and project management principles.
  • Proficiency in spreadsheets and industry software such as FREW, SLIDE, Settle 3D.
  • Familiarity with Eurocode 7, UK design codes, ground investigation, and construction contracts.
  • Awareness of consulting business operations and innovative solutions for client value.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Desirable Skills:
  • Proficiency or willingness to learn PLAXIS or similar software.
  • Confidence in client-facing roles and promoting technical capabilities.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Geology, Civil Engineering, or similar.
  • Postgraduate qualification (MSc, MEng, PhD) is advantageous.
  • Chartered status or working towards it.
Additional Requirements:
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Support for chartership, CPD, mentoring, and project-specific security clearance as needed.
