Geotechnical Design Manager

Reports to: Design Delivery Director/Lead

Location: London Office and Buckinghamshire

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the geotechnical aspects of the HS2 Track Contract, including Calvert Depot. This includes piling and earthworks at Calvert, checking geotechnical information transferred from Main Works to Track Systems contractor, and assessing geotechnical issues from the Alliance.
  • Analyze handover data from Main Works concerning frost protection layers and subgrades, focusing on heave, settlements, and constructability issues related to geotechnics for our track.
  • Manage and lead geotechnical activities related to Calvert depot, including piling works and earthworks, providing foundations for the IMD building and railhead.
  • Attend weekly meetings with the construction, design teams, and clients in Birmingham, Calvert, and London.
  • Chair meetings for geotechnical issues like Geohazards identified during construction and provide technical support for mitigation measures.
  • Support the client in identifying changes, risks, and opportunities, aiming for efficiencies and cost savings.
  • Review scope of construction-stage geotechnical investigations and surveys.
  • Assist in optimization studies and liaise with commercial, planning, design delivery teams, and designers.
  • Coordinate with construction teams to manage geotechnical issues.
  • Provide technical input and support for commercial communications, including SNCs, NCRs, CEs, and departures.
  • Work closely with Engineering Managers to ensure timely, optimized delivery aligned with client requirements.
  • Resolve geotechnical issues within the area of responsibility promptly.
  • Review monitoring reports and certificates; support technical assurance during design, construction, and handover phases.

Key Skills and Experience

  • Degree in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering
  • Knowledge of geotechnical design and construction methodologies
  • Experience with settlement and heave analysis, Rayleigh waves, and mitigation measures
  • Good understanding of relevant geotechnical standards and their application in design and construction
  • Experience in pile testing, interpretation, and pile design/construction
  • Experience managing relationships with third parties and contractors
  • Excellent communication skills
