Fantastic opportunities have arisen to join BEAR Scotland’s NW team as a Geotechnical Asset Inspector in Perth or Inverness (full time).

The North West Trunk Road Unit spans some 1,422km of trunk road through some of the most scenic parts of the country. It also includes 1,501 bridges and structures, including the Kessock Bridge which carries the A9 north of Inverness and the A87 Skye Crossing.

The North West Unit covers a huge area of Scotland, from Thurso and Wick in the very north of the Highlands down to Campbeltown in Argyll and Bute, from Uig on Skye to Perth and Stirling in the central belt.

Role includes:

  • Undertaking weekly daytime Safety Inspections for Geotechnical Assets such as Rock Slopes, Earthwork Slopes, Land Slopes and Rock Netting to record defects and monitor that represent a potential risk to the trunk road network or potential hazard to the travelling public and recommending the carrying out of further assessment and repairs.
  • Walked condition inspections to visually assess the condition of the geotechnical assets to identify defects that will contribute to the establishment of programmes of further monitoring that do not require urgent attention.
  • Walked conditions inspections to validate the inventory held in the Transport Scotland
Asset Management Performance System and to collect and update the inventory
    when changes are made.
  • Report to the Principal Geotechnical Engineer the inspections of geotechnical characteristics and condition of geotechnical assets.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • As the role of an Inspector can involve interaction with the public, candidates will be
subject to the basic disclosure process through Disclosure Scotland.
  • Although previous experience of geotechnical assets inspections and monitoring is preferable, it is not essential as training and mentoring will be provided.
  • Candidates must however have good computer skills as all inspections are carried out using data capture devices that download to Transport Scotland’s Asset Management Performance System.
  • Experience of Microsoft Word and Excel will also be useful.
  • A full approved driving licence is essential.
