  • Mining hazard and risk assessments for legacy mining hazards.

  • Rock excavation works, including rock slopes, basements and tunnelling.

  • Rock fall hazard and risk assessment and mitigation.

  • Design and oversight of ground improvement schemes and specialist grouting of karstic and mining sites.

  • Three-dimensional ground modelling and associated engineering design for complex geological sites.

  • Geomorphological and terrain mapping, building models of landforms, processes, hazards and risks and integrating models into engineering design.

  • Landslide assessment hazard and risk assessment (Stantec are recognised international specialists in runout modelling of debris flows).

About The Role

Due to the nature and location of our current and future pipeline of work, this position would ideally be based in London, Reading or Cambridge, but we will consider other locations for the right candidate. Stantec offer flexible working arrangements and there is a typical requirement for attendance in the office three days a week.

As part of our team, you will be involved in a varied portfolio of projects, where you will apply your technical knowledge and expertise to plan and monitor ground investigations, develop and interpret ground models, manage data in GIS systems, provide geotechnical advice to clients and design teams, and oversee the delivery of specialist ground improvement schemes.

Day To Day Tasks Would Include

  • Undertaking desk-based geological appraisals for karstic and legacy mining areas across the UK on various geologies.

  • Scoping, planning, and co-ordinating ground investigations to obtain geological information to inform design and construction of projects in accordance with the ICE Yellow Book.

  • Analysing soil, rock, groundwater, and other geological data to determine geological risks, ground behaviour, and their impact on engineering projects.

  • Undertake geological mapping using rock mass rating systems such as RMR, Q and GSI.

  • Designing and monitoring ground improvement works, particularly compaction grouting, bulk grouting and other specialist grouting techniques.

  • Developing ground models in accordance with the IAEG Guidelines for the development and application of engineering geological models on projects.

  • Preparing geological and geomorphological maps, cross-sections, sketch conceptual ground models, 3D digital ground models and reports for project planning and design.

  • Undertaking debris flow analysis run out modelling using Stantec’s inhouse software Debris Flow Predictor and other commercial debris flow tools.

  • Collaborating with engineers and planners to incorporate geological data into project designs.

  • Developing and maintaining constructive relationships with contractors, clients and colleagues, providing clear technical advice and ensuring projects are delivered to programme, budget and quality standards.

You would be joining a global team of specialists that reduce the impacts of geohazards, develop and preserve critical infrastructure, protect communities and safeguard the environment. You will contribute to projects that reduce the impacts of karstic ground instability, legacy mining hazards and landslides, managing complex ground conditions to deliver successful schemes.

This is an opportunity to make a tangible impact on significant projects, develop your technical and commercial skills, and grow your career within a globally recognised consultancy committed to creating communities that thrive.

About You

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering geology, geotechnical engineering or related field and at least 3 to 6 years of relevant work experience.

  • Excellent understanding of ground models, and practical knowledge of IAEG Guidelines.

  • Demonstrated experience in preparation of desk-study appraisals and detailed interpretive reports.

  • Ability to interpret the results of intrusive ground investigations and geophysical and remote sensing data to provide clear, practical design recommendations.

  • Field experience of ground investigations and geomorphological and/or geological mapping in various terrains.

  • Experience in mine consolidation grouting, compaction grouting of karstic solution features and/or landslide/rockfall mitigation structures will be an advantage.

  • We have a strong preference for candidates with experience of using Leapfrog Works and/or GIS (ArcPro or QGIS).
