A message from the Principal:

As Principal, I am thrilled at the prospect of introducing you to Outwood Academy Carlton, a proud member of the Outwood Grange Academies Trust, serving the community of Royston, Carlton and its surrounding areas. Our core purpose, to 'Continually and repeatedly grow, well-informed, 'good' human beings who are armed with the character, skill, emotional intelligence and qualifications to be personally, occupationally and/or professionally successful people,' is at the heart of everything we do. This aligns seamlessly with the Trust's vision of 'students first, raising standards and transforming lives,' ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive.

I am immensely proud that our students possess a strong moral code and behave well in and outside of lessons and they actively contribute to the wider community. Our students display an in-depth understanding of protected characteristics and understand the importance of fundamental British values. As an advocate of research informed pedagogical practice I am passionate about our 5 pillars of learning. Equally, I am proud of how we explicitly teach behaviours through our personal development curriculum and our positive discipline for learning and life practices. This allows all students to understand how to be safe, be responsible, be respectful and be extraordinary in the 21st century. The unwavering dedication of our staff, who know the needs of students and respond accordingly are pivotal in delivering this holistic education.

We are seeking prospective colleagues who share our passion for developing well-rounded individuals and align with our core purpose. I look forward to welcoming you into our academy.

Mr Paul Taylor

Are you a Geography enthusiast ready to inspire the next generation? Do you dream of a career where you can truly make a difference?

We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and inspiring classroom practitioner with a real passion for Geography. We offer an exciting opportunity to join a supportive and motivated team and you must possess the skills and determination to make a significant difference to the lives of our students and share our single goal of 'students first'. Applications are invited from both newly qualified and experienced professionals.

Outwood Academy Carlton is situated in North East Barnsley and is easily accessible from South and West Yorkshire, with Wakefield, Sheffield, Doncaster, Huddersfield and Pontefract all within commuting distance. We are just 5 miles from the M1.

Humanities at Outwood Academy Carlton

We are a faculty of 8, consisting of 4 History and 4 Geography teachers. We are passionate about the subjects we teach and always put our students first. The Humanities team is situated in the same block, allowing the team to work closely together. We have state of the art smart boards in each of our rooms and access to a central computing area. At Outwood Academy Carlton you will find an extremely supportive and close faculty, who are excited to welcome a new colleague to our team.

Geography:

Geography helps you make sense of the world around you. As a team our goal is to create students who have a curiosity for the world around them and want to make it a better place. As Michael Palin said "geography students hold the key to the world's problems". We love our subject and are keen to develop the geographers of the future.

At KS3 we study a 3 year curriculum, we cover a wide range of exciting and engaging topics such as Why is our World Amazing, How diverse is Africa, to local issues such as Should the council build MU2 and MU3. Fieldwork is extremely important to our department, we are in the process of introducing a range of new field visits and local studies to our curriculum. At GCSE we follow AQA. The units we cover are Paper 1: Natural Hazards, Living World (Hot Deserts), Coasts and Rivers; Paper 2: Urban, Economic Change; Resource Management and Water; Paper 3: Pre-Release and Fieldwork.

History:

The study of History is critically important, as everything that is happening around us has been influenced by and is a direct result of that which preceded it. In this way, we believe the study of History is explicitly relevant to all of us. As Theodore Roosevelt said: "The more you know about the past the better prepared you are for the future." We truly believe that in making outstanding historians we are better preparing students for the world we live in.

We have a fully inclusive and diverse curriculum including the opportunity to study the history of their local area, in order for them to examine how national and international events have impacted their local society. At KS3 we start with Ancient World Medicine in year 7 and cover topics such as Medieval England and the Mali Empire and finish year 7 with the Tudors. In year 8 topics such as Enslavement, Emancipation and Civil Rights and the Industrial Revolution are taught and in year 9 the units are all focused on events of the 20th century with units such as Post WWII conflict and The Thatcher Years. At KS3 students study British History, World History and Local History. Within these units there are lessons on how women and people of colour have made an impact on the world we live in today.

At GCSE we follow the Pearson Edexcel exam board and study the units of Early Elizabethan England, Medicine Through Time, Weimar and Nazi Germany and The American West.

We are very proud of our Faculty and would welcome you to visit.

Outwood Grange Academies Trust provides a high-quality learning and cultural environment that inspires and motivates children. Whether you are ambitious for progression or determined to be an outstanding classroom teacher, Outwood is the place or you. Leadership development, succession planning and capacity building are major priorities for the Trust as this enables us to facilitate rapid progression for those who want to advance either in the classroom or at a leadership level.

Outwood Academy Carlton is an Ofsted Good rated, 11- 16 academy based in the friendly, attractive village of Carlton in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The Academy became part of the Outwood Family of Schools in 2016.

In October 2024, Ofsted noted that "students are taught to be 'good human beings' as part of the ethos at Outwood Academy Carlton" and that they "have a strong moral code and behave well in and outside of lessons", including contributing to the wider community. Ofsted also noted that "leaders are determined that all students should succeed and be well prepared for life through a curriculum that develops their knowledge, skills and character". Furthermore, Ofsted acknowledges that students who regularly attend school make strong progress as a result of the school's rapid improvement.

We believe that learning should be both enjoyable and enriching. We are innovators with a knowledge-rich curriculum, designed to personalise learning for every student, helping them to reach their potential. With a holistic view of education, we value vocational, practical, creative and academic excellence equally, creating an environment where every student can shine.

We have won numerous awards as a school and we have been accredited with the prestigious IQM Award, in addition to being an IQM Centre of Excellence, which highlights that inclusion at all levels is of paramount importance to us. We are also delighted to have been awarded the United Against Bullying Bronze Award from the Anti-Bullying Alliance of the National Children's Bureau which demonstrates our commitment to stopping bullying and improving the wellbeing of our students. We are also very proud to have been awarded Bronze Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

If you are interested in joining us, please contact Vic Aston, Vice Principal (v.ashton@carlton.outwood.com) who would be pleased to tell you more, by email, and we would be delighted to welcome you on a visit if you would like to see us in person.

If you share our vision, then join our family.
