Job summary

Illumina in the United Kingdom (Cambridge – Hybrid) is seeking a Software Engineer 2 to contribute to cloud-based software that supports genomics and precision health. You will work with product owners, architects, and engineers to design, develop, test, and maintain scalable solutions across multiple teams.

You’ll apply an engineering mindset, participate in agile rituals, and help deliver high-quality software while expanding your expertise and impact within the team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Experience with Java or a similar high-level language.
• Strong understanding of object-oriented analysis and design.
• Experience with Git, SVN, or similar version control systems.
• Proven track record in agile software development (Scrum/Kanban).
• Excellent communication and collaborative skills.
• Experience with relational databases and data persistence.
• Experience with Spring, Spring Boot, Hibernate, or RabbitMQ.
• Experience with Docker and containerization.
• Exposure to cloud platforms like AWS and Kubernetes.
• Experience with frontend frameworks (AngularJS/KnockoutJS).
• Familiarity with Nextflow is a plus.
• Knowledge of genomics or life sciences is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with product owners and other developers to design, develop, test, and maintain cloud-based applications in an agile environment.
• Ensure architecture aligns with business and user requirements.
• Implement bug fixes, enhancements, and new features to improve quality and customer experience.
• Contribute to technical discussions, code reviews, and continuous improvement.
• Provide technical support for escalated production issues when required.
• Apply software engineering best practices to deliver reliable, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
