Job summary

Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust in Sheffield is seeking a Genetic Technologist to join the Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service. This NHS AfC Band 5 role provides analytical support through molecular and cytogenetic testing, developing expertise across modern genetic technologies in a supportive environment.

The successful applicant will hold a biological science degree (or equivalent), be AHCS registered or working toward it, and bring substantial experience in genetic techniques

Join our dynamic team at Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service as a Genetic Technologist. You'll provide important analytical support, contributing directly to patient diagnostics through molecular and cytogenetic testing. We are looking for someone who has:

Degree (or equivalent) in biological science or a related discipline

AHCS registered or committed to working towards it

Substantial analytical experience in genetic techniques within an accredited NHS diagnostic laboratory or similar setting.

Excellent analytical skills.

Main duties of the job

Reporting into the Genetic Technologist (B6), your responsibilities will include:

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

• Degree or equivalent, or equivalent appropriate experience in biological science (or related discipline)
• Committed to working towards professional registration (AHCS)
• Registered with the AHCS

Experience

• Substantial experience of genetic techniques having worked in an accredited NHS diagnostic laboratory or equivalent workplace
• Demonstrable experience of a range of molecular and cytogenetic techniques

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of the principles of human genetics
• High level of technical skill with laboratory processes
• Proficient in a wide range of genetic techniques
• Ability to follow protocols strictly with awareness of health and safety issues
• Knowledge of the principles of human diagnostic genetic testing

Personal Attributes

• Able to carry responsibility for day-to-day management of workload and work to tight deadlines where necessary
• Keen to learn and develop new competencies
• Enthusiasm to promote integrated working practices
