We are looking for an experienced laboratory scientist, who can support the technical aspects of our diagnostic sequencing services. You must have worked in a diagnostic molecular laboratory. Experience with next generation sequencing, array set-up and/or quality management would be an advantage. You must be meticulous, a good communicator and able to organise yourself.

The purpose of this post is to support the service primarily through contributing to the laboratory work undertaken in the Multi-omic Medicine Service by the Molecular Neuropathology team. The post holder will perform molecular laboratory tests for the diagnosis and management of neurological tumours as required. They will ensure that the laboratory tests and reports are completed to a high standard within target reporting times. They will have a wide knowledge of clinical molecular genetics.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is expected to:
• To be responsible for the timely delivery and reporting of genetic analyses
• Rotate through and become competent in discrete areas of Molecular Neuropathology and Liver Molecular Genetics (LMG) as required; participate in other appropriate rotations as required.
• To be personally responsible for the time management of multiple tasks as described in the job description and to respond to the changing requirements of laboratory by accommodating additional tasks and responsibilities as required
• Maintain and routinely operate the complex analytical equipment used within the Multi-omic Medicine Service to ensure its accurate function; verify the results obtained in preparation for issue to service users
• To demonstrate and apply a thorough understanding of the technical, scientific and clinical principles involved in the delivery of the genetics service for which the job-holder has responsibility. This will include trouble-shooting of assays and techniques both existing and in development
• Safely collect, receive, record and dispose of samples intended for the Multi-omic Medicine Service
• Replenish supplies and resources used in analysis and for maintaining equipment and databases in the Multi-omic Medicine Service
• Continually feedback information on all the above to peers and senior colleagues
• Participate in regular review and audit of the operational aspects of the Multi-omic Medicine Service, updating practices, policies and their documentation; regularly participate in learning activities including research and development
• Adhere to ISO:15189 standards and actively participate in the quality management system

At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 April 2024 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests. Person specification

Qualifications

  • 1st or 2nd class honours degree in genetics or biological science

Experience

  • Experience in a clinical laboratory (delivering clinical molecular genetic services)
  • Knowledge and experience of a wide range of genetics techniques and their clinical application and interpretation
  • Experienced in the use of data analysis software and/or variant interpretation programmes.
  • Experienced in the use of next generation sequencing technology
  • Experienced in array wet lab work

Skills & Knowledge

  • Clear verbal and written skills in communication
  • Understanding of QMS/ISO15189 guidelines
  • Experience of liquid handling robots for the automation of laboratory testing
