Job summary

The Earlham Institute in Norwich seeks a (Senior) Postdoctoral Research Scientist to advance generative AI methods for biological design and closed-loop discovery. You will develop novel AI algorithms for design, prioritise experiments, and learn from experimental feedback within EI's Generative Digital Biology program.

Ideal candidates will have a PhD in a quantitative field, strong Python and AI framework experience (PyTorch/JAX/TensorFlow) and a track record of high-quality research outputs

Qualifications

• PhD (awarded or expected within 6 months) in Computer Science, AI, ML, Computational Biology, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Engineering or a related quantitative discipline.
• Strong knowledge in modern ML, generative modelling, reinforcement learning, Bayesian optimisation, active learning, uncertainty quantification, multi-objective optimisation or combinatorial optimisation.
• Excellent programming skills in Python and practical experience with leading AI frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Develop generative, causal AI and optimisation methods for biological design and experimentation.
• Lead a defined workstream, set scientific priorities, manage risks, and deliver with limited supervision.
• Collaborate with EI groups and external partners to identify biological use cases and prioritise candidates for experimental validation.
• Prepare manuscripts and conference papers for AI/ML and biology venues; contribute to open-source software and reproducible workflows.
