Job summary

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Specialty Doctor in General Surgery to join the Basildon Hospital surgical team. You will provide comprehensive care for elective and emergency cases, participate in on-call rosters and contribute to teaching and governance within a supportive multidisciplinary environment.

The role emphasizes patient-centred care, clinical leadership and engagement in service development to improve outcomes across the surgical pathway.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive care for elective and emergency general surgical patients, ensuring high standards of safe, effective and patient-centred care.
• Assess, diagnose and manage patients presenting with acute surgical conditions, including participation in emergency admissions, trauma management and on-call services.
• Participate in consultant-led ward rounds, providing ongoing clinical management and coordinating patient care throughout the surgical pathway.
• Undertake outpatient clinics, theatre sessions and endoscopy lists, contributing to the timely assessment and treatment of patients.
• Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective communication, continuity of care and optimal patient outcomes.
• Participate in the full-shift on-call rota, supporting the provision of 24-hour emergency surgical services.
• Supervise, teach and support junior doctors, medical students and allied health professionals, contributing to education and workforce development.
• Engage actively in clinical audit, governance, quality improvement and service development initiatives, promoting continuous improvement and maintaining high standards of clinical practice.
