Job description

- Up to 8 sessions per week (negotiable)

Main duties of the job

As a salaried General Practitioner you will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred primary care services. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and be responsible for the ongoing clinical care of a defined patient list, as well as unscheduled care.

Weekly Duties Typically Include:

Conducting face-to-face, telephone, and online consultations with patients

Managing acute, chronic, and complex medical conditions

Undertaking clinical administration (e.g. reviewing results, prescriptions, referrals, and letters)

Participating in on-call sessions as part of the duty doctor rota

Carrying out home visits and care home reviews as needed

Engaging in clinical meetings, educational sessions, and case discussions

Supporting clinical audits, QOF targets, and quality improvement projects

Responsibilities:

Ensure safe, evidence-based prescribing and patient care

Maintain accurate and timely medical records

Collaborate with practice nurses, pharmacist, and other clinicians

Support training, mentoring, or supervision of students

Participate in safeguarding, complaints management, and significant event reviews

Contribute to practice resilience, continuity, and service development

Accountability:

Reports to the Practice Manager and GP Partners

Works in line with Health Board guidance and NHS Wales policies

Expected to follow GMC standards, NICE guidelines, and local protocols

About us

We are a established, forward-thinking GP practice with excellent patient relationships in the rural town of Newcastle Emlyn. We are a partnership of five doctors together with 3 salaried GPs, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and a supportive health care team of practice nurses, community nurses, pharmacist, health visitor and midwives, assisted by our administrative staff.

We are a training practice and currently host 2 GP registrars as well as pharmacy and medical students.

Job responsibilities

We are seeking a committed and patient-centred Salaried GP to join our friendly and supportive team at Meddygfa Emlyn. This role offers the opportunity to work in a well-established practice with a strong emphasis on teamwork, clinical quality, and continuity of care.

The successful applicant will provide high-quality, evidence-based medical care to our diverse patient population, contributing to all aspects of general practice and supporting the wider clinical and non-clinical team.

Key Responsibilities

Provide consultations and clinical care for patients presenting with a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting

Manage patients with chronic diseases, acute illness, and complex conditions

Carry out home visits and care home reviews when clinically appropriate

Participate in the practice duty doctor rota, managing urgent and on-the-day demand

Review laboratory results, hospital correspondence, and ensure timely follow-up

Prescribe safely and effectively in line with current best practice and local formulary

Maintain accurate and comprehensive clinical records using the practices IT system

Contribute to the achievement of QOF, LES, DES, and other clinical targets

Support clinical audits, quality improvement, and significant event analysis

Adhere to local safeguarding procedures and contribute to patient safety processes

Engage with multidisciplinary team (MDT) working and referral pathways

Take part in clinical and team meetings and educational activities

Support the supervision of students or trainees if applicable

Uphold professional standards as outlined by the GMC and other regulatory bodies

Accountability and Support

Reports directly to the GP Partners and Practice Manager

Supported by a team including GPs, ANPs, nurses, HCAs, pharmacists, and administrative staff

Expected to work in line with NHS Wales standards and Health Board policies

Person Specification
Experience
  • Experience of Working in Primary Care Settings
  • Demonstrated experience during training or post-qualification in managing patients in a general practice or similar environment.
  • Managing a Broad Range of Clinical Presentations
  • Competence in diagnosing and managing acute, chronic, and complex health conditions independently.
  • Working in a Multidisciplinary Team
  • Experience collaborating with nurses, healthcare assistants, pharmacists, and administrative staff in patient care.
  • Use of Clinical IT Systems
  • Competence in using electronic health records and prescribing systems.
  • Clinical Governance and Patient Safety Awareness
  • Understanding of and participation in clinical audits, safeguarding processes, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Communication and Consultation Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and colleagues, including managing sensitive issues with empathy and professionalism.
  • Experience in Welsh NHS Primary Care

Qualifications
  • Medical Degree (MBBS, MBChB or equivalent)
  • A recognised primary medical qualification from a GMC-approved institution.
  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Must hold a current, full registration with a licence to practise in the UK.
  • Inclusion on the GMC GP Register
  • Completion of GP specialty training (e.g. MRCGP or equivalent).
  • Entry on the Welsh Performers List
  • Required to practise as an NHS GP in Wales. If not already listed, eligibility and willingness to apply is essential.
  • Right to Work in the UK
