Job description

General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care and support clinicians in the smooth running of the surgery by handling routine administration and some basic clinical duties, enabling clinicians to focus on patient care. The role aims to improve patient access and experience.

GPAs operate under the supervision of GPs and other qualified clinicians.

We are seeking a GP Assistant to join Highgate Medical Practice, S72 8WL. The role is 23 hours per week over 4 days.

Main Duties
  • Preparing patients for GP consultations, including taking brief histories and basic readings.
  • Arranging appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-ups.
  • Extracting and coding information from clinical letters and adding to notes.
  • Managing clinical post, prioritizing actions, and signposting to other professionals.
  • Completing non-opinion forms and supporting the GP with forms such as insurance, mortgage, and benefits.
  • Supporting the GP with immunisations and wound care.
  • Explaining treatment procedures to patients.
  • Liaising with outside agencies, e.g., contacting on-call doctors for advice or admission arrangements.

Experience
  • Experience in a healthcare setting
  • Experience working with the public
  • Knowledge of chaperone procedures
  • Ability to record accurate clinical notes
  • Understanding scope of practice and when to seek support
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Polite telephone manner
  • Proficiency in Office and Outlook
  • Experience with EMIS Web and SystmOne
  • Experience in general practice and handling various clinical conditions
Knowledge and Skills
  • Understanding of health promotion strategies
  • Knowledge of diabetes, asthma, CHD, immunisations
  • Ability to support basic wound care and ECGs
