Job summary

VolkerHighways in Luton is recruiting a Highways Operative to join our Term Maintenance team. You will perform kerb laying, footway works, drainage repairs and asphalt patching while adhering to safety standards and working with internal and external teams.

You’ll support emergency call-outs, winter duties and be part of an out-of-hours rota. A full UK driving licence is preferred and training opportunities are provided to develop new skills and qualifications.

Qualifications

• NRSWA and SWQR qualifications are preferred.
• Experience in highways maintenance, civils or general construction is beneficial.
• Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and capable of operating or learning plant and tools.

Responsibilities

• Carry out a range of highways maintenance tasks including kerb laying and footway works.
• Carry out drainage repairs and installation and asphalt patching.
• Support winter maintenance and out-of-hours call-out duties as required.
• Work with direct labour and subcontractors to meet daily/weekly targets.
• Ensure work is carried out safely and to VolkerHighways’ quality standards.

About the role

We are currently looking for a Highways Operative to join our Highways Term Maintenance Contract based out of our depot in Luton, Bedfordshire.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out a variety of highways maintenance tasks including:
  
  
  
  • Kerb laying and footway works
  
  
  • Drainage repairs and installation
  
  
  • Asphalt and patching works
  
  
  • General civils and groundworks
  
  
  
  


• Operate mechanical plant and machinery (training and certification where required).


• Support emergency call-out and winter maintenance operations as part of an out-of-hours rota.


• Work collaboratively with direct labour and subcontract partners to achieve daily/weekly targets.


• Ensure all work is delivered safely, efficiently and in line with VolkerHighways’ quality standards.


• Maintain tools, equipment and vehicles in a safe, clean and serviceable condition.

About you

• Experience in highways maintenance, construction or general civils (preferred but not essential).


• NRSWA or Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR)


• Confident operating plant and tools


• A strong team player with a positive and reliable work ethic.


• Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.


• Full UK driving licence (HGV desirable but not essential).


• Willingness to undertake training and development (e.g. NRSWA, CSCS, winter duties).
