Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Carry out a broad range of highways maintenance activities safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
  • Install and maintain street lighting, signposts, bollards and related assets.
  • Undertake excavation, backfilling and other general highways maintenance tasks.
  • Complete work instructions issued via handheld devices.
  • Work within health, safety and environmental requirements at all times.
  • Stop work if unsafe to proceed; participate in on-call rota when required.
  • Support winter maintenance activities as part of a rota.

About The Role

Balfour Beatty has an opportunity for a General Operative to join our UKCS Living Places business in East Sussex.

In this role, you will support the delivery of highways maintenance activities across the local network, helping to keep communities moving safely and efficiently. You will carry out a broad range of operational tasks to a high standard, working safely, responsibly and at a commercial pace.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone with highways maintenance experience who takes pride in delivering work right first time, every time.

What you'll be doing
As a General Operative, Your Responsibilities Will Include
  • Carrying out a broad range of highways maintenance activities safely, efficiently and to a high standard
  • Installing and maintaining items such as street lighting, signposts, bollards and associated highway assets
  • Undertaking excavation, backfilling and other general highways maintenance tasks
  • Completing work instructions issued via handheld devices
  • Working within health, safety and environmental requirements at all times
  • Stopping work where it is unsafe to start or continue
  • Reporting observations, both good and bad, to support continuous improvement
  • Participating in out-of-hours and on-call rota arrangements where required
  • Supporting winter maintenance activities as part of a rota system
  • Attending training when requested
  • Acting as an ambassador for Balfour Beatty and representing the business professionally
Who we're looking for

We are looking for someone with good experience in highways maintenance who is confident working in a safety-critical, operational environment.

The Successful Candidate Will Ideally Have
  • Experience carrying out highways maintenance activities
  • NRSWA qualification
  • First Aid at Work
  • A full clean driving licence
  • Safe Digging qualification, including CAT and Genny
  • Relevant plant tickets, where appropriate
  • Chapter 8 training
  • Plant awareness
  • Abrasive Wheels training

  • Basic computer skills and confidence using handheld devices

You will be safety-focused, reliable and willing to work as part of a team. You will take responsibility for the quality of your work, follow instructions carefully and ask for support when needed.
