Job description

General Maintenance Operative – Sudbury – Near Burton upon Trent – Secure Site

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent General Building Operative to join our Ministry of Justice (MoJ) account at HMP Sudbury in Derby. This role is based on-site.

There may be a need to work some weekends on a rota basis, with an additional allowance of 15% of the basic salary.

Role Overview

The General Building Operative plays a vital role in ensuring that planned and reactive maintenance work within the prison is carried out safely, compliantly, and efficiently.

Working Hours

The standard hours are 39 per week, across 7 days, with a weekend shift pattern if applicable.

Responsibilities
  • Work in a team to perform general maintenance tasks and support tradespeople on site.
  • Provide professional assistance to those requesting support, including escorting contractors when required.
  • Complete DIY tasks such as decorating, hanging notice boards, building furniture, and repairing items around the prison.
  • Check appliances, fittings, and the general environment to ensure they are in good working order; report defects to the Team Leader.
  • Maintain good housekeeping, including litter picking and landscaping around the grounds if needed.
Requirements
  • Solid experience in DIY and general building maintenance.
  • CITB relevant certification or equivalent.
  • Willingness to learn new skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
  • Preferably qualified in a trade with experience in general maintenance.

Prison Security Clearance is required (we will support you through this process).
