Job summary

The Role

We are recruiting a General Bioscience Technician to join our technical team within the School of Life and Health Sciences. The successful candidate will support the preparation of specialist teaching spaces, equipment and materials used across a range of bioscience disciplines. Previous experience of providing technical support in a laboratory environment is essential.

You will work closely with specialist technical staff within the School, as well as with the wider technical community, to deliver high-quality support for teaching and learning activities. You will play a key role in supporting high-quality practical teaching and enhancing the student learning experience across a range of bioscience disciplines.

Key responsibilities include preparing and setting up equipment, materials and practical teaching activities across subject areas such as biochemistry, nutrition and food science, microbiology, ecology and zoology. The role requires a sound understanding of laboratory health and safety practices, including risk assessment, COSHH, and safe systems of work.

You will also contribute to stock control and procurement activities, while supporting the maintenance and effective operation of laboratory facilities and equipment. This includes analytical instruments, safety cabinets, pipettes, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, sterilisation and water purification systems, as well as waste management and laboratory cleaning facilities.

Applicants should be qualified to degree level in a relevant scientific discipline or hold an appropriate professional registration, such as RSci or RSciTech.
