Position Summary:

Reporting to the Assistant Network Lead, the Gas Trainee Operative will assist the Main Layer in tasks to ensure high-quality service within the gas distribution network.

Gas Trainee Operative Fitter Responsibilities:
  1. Carry out work on the network as instructed, including mains replacement, new service installations, district governor maintenance, dial before you dig, mains surveying, and service disconnections.
  2. Perform general duties as required by the business in other functions.
  3. Assist the Main Layer in responding to PREs and other network issues.
  4. Support routine and non-routine maintenance on the gas network and equipment.
  5. Provide technical assistance in hazard resolution.
  6. Collect and report operational data related to the gas network.
  7. Collaborate with the team to resolve hazards, investigate leaks, and manage events.
  8. Ensure minimal disruption to customers and work efficiently.
  9. Work with contractors and liaise with the public and external agencies on-site.
  10. Participate in the emergency call-out rota (one week in four annually).
Health and Safety:

All staff must follow established health and safety procedures, including:

  • Adhering to IEG’s standards and policies.
  • Identifying and communicating workplace hazards.
  • Regularly reviewing risks and hazards.
  • Participating in accident investigations when necessary.
  • Engaging in relevant staff training.
  • Promoting a safe workplace and supporting health and safety initiatives.
  • Complying with rehabilitation plans after incidents.
