Overview

Position Title: Gas Path Engineer (Diesel/Gasoline)

Location: Warwickshire

Employment: Contract

IR35 determination: Inside

Function / Department: Powertrain Engineering

This role is responsible for the design and development of the propulsion systems within the systems engineering function layer, across both logical and physical solution domains.

The role holder will lead the creation and ownership of system engineering artefacts for new and existing propulsion concepts, features, and capabilities within the xHEV Diesel/Gasoline domain. A key focus will be on ensuring that systems are legally compliant, deliver on customer expectations, and remain competitive in the global market.

The role requires subject matter expertise in emissions after-treatment and gas path systems, with strong knowledge of ICE powertrains, electrification (MHEV/PHEV), torque, electrical/thermal energy management, and global emissions requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver robust system requirements and targets on-cycle to programmes.
  • Develop and maintain system engineering artefacts including MBSE models, use case analysis, logical architecture diagrams (LAD), functional failure analysis (FFA/DFMEA/DRBFM), DVP, and standards.
  • Drive delivery of new functions via Statement of Capability (SOC) and Feature Statement of Intent (FSOI).
  • Identify and resolve system compatibility issues efficiently.
  • Ensure adherence to engineering methods, tools, and processes.
  • Provide expert knowledge to support wider team understanding of functional areas.
  • Lead analysis of complex CAE and physical test data.
  • Chair technical reviews/forums and resolve cross-functional issues.
  • Conduct studies and develop methods for future propulsion technologies.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Strong experience in Systems Engineering, ideally within automotive.
  • Expertise in propulsion/powertrain engineering: emissions after-treatment and gas path systems.
  • Knowledge of base engines, 48V systems, batteries, torque and energy arbitration.
  • Experience with xHEV propulsion system integration (MHEV/PHEV/BEV).
  • Proven background in system definition, architecture development, requirements, integration, and assessment.
  • Exposure to calibration and control systems in propulsion.
  • Experience with MBSE and systems architecting tools.
  • CAE and physical test exposure at vehicle, propulsion, and subsystem levels.
  • Experience defining test cases and DoE for HIL, PIL, VIL, and vehicle environments.
  • Strong data analytics skills (Excel macros, Matlab, MDA, Concerto).
  • Knowledge of 8D, Six Sigma, and issue resolution methods.
  • Familiarity with Product Creation Development System (PCDS) and Agile delivery.
  • Strong understanding of engineering planning and delivery processes.
  • Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Full UK or equivalent driving licence.
