About Lion Landscapes

Lion Landscapes is a conservation and research organisation dedicated to protecting large carnivores, their prey, and their natural habitats while supporting the communities that live alongside wildlife.

The organisation works with local communities and conservation stakeholders to develop programmes that promote wildlife conservation and sustainable coexistence between people and nature. Lion Landscapes is affiliated with Oxford University’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) but operates independent programmes in Kenya and Tanzania.

Through research, community engagement, and collaborative conservation initiatives, Lion Landscapes seeks to deliver lasting benefits for wildlife, ecosystems, and local communities.

About the Role

Lion Landscapes is seeking a strategic and experienced Fundraising Lead to oversee its fundraising strategy, diversify income streams, and strengthen the organisation’s long-term financial sustainability.

This permanent, full-time remote position offers an opportunity for an experienced fundraising professional to lead income generation across institutional grants, major individual donors, trusts, foundations, and other philanthropic sources. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing multi-year fundraising strategies, achieving ambitious income targets, and securing funding to support the organisation’s conservation programmes.

A key priority will be increasing unrestricted income, diversifying funding sources, and identifying new opportunities for sustainable growth. The Fundraising Lead will also oversee grant portfolio management, donor stewardship, individual giving campaigns, fundraising performance analysis, and donor relationship management.

Working closely with the Chief Operating Officer, CEOs, Corporate Partnerships Lead, Finance Manager, Communications Manager, and Fundraising Officer, the successful candidate will ensure that fundraising activities are coordinated, financially sound, and aligned with Lion Landscapes’ wider organisational objectives.

The organisation prefers candidates based in the United Kingdom.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Fundraising Leadership

  • Provide strategic oversight of all fundraising activities and develop a multi-year fundraising strategy aligned with organisational objectives.

  • Establish and implement plans to achieve income targets and support the sustainable growth of conservation programmes.

  • Prioritise the growth of unrestricted income to strengthen organisational flexibility and financial resilience.

  • Coordinate donor communications across departments to ensure consistency in messaging and engagement.

  • Work with senior leadership to align fundraising priorities with programme needs, organisational growth, and long-term financial sustainability.

2. Innovation and Income Diversification

  • Work with the CEOs to identify and develop new fundraising opportunities across different income streams.

  • Explore innovative approaches to fundraising that increase financial resilience and reduce reliance on individual funding sources.

  • Collaborate with the Corporate Partnerships Lead to develop joint strategies for identifying, cultivating, and securing corporate partnerships.

  • Monitor developments in philanthropy and fundraising to identify emerging opportunities for income growth.

  • Support the organisation in building a diversified and sustainable funding base.

3. Funding Pipeline and Income Growth

  • Develop and maintain a prioritised pipeline of funding opportunities across institutional grants, major donors, trusts, foundations, and other agreed income streams.

  • Work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and Finance Manager to identify short- and long-term funding requirements.

  • Assess funding opportunities according to organisational priorities, financial needs, eligibility, and potential impact.

  • Lead efforts to secure new funding in line with organisational growth plans and agreed fundraising targets.

  • Monitor progress across the funding pipeline and adjust priorities to maximise income-generation opportunities.

4. Grant Portfolio Management

  • Oversee the full grant management lifecycle, from identifying and assessing funding opportunities to proposal development, submission, reporting, and renewal.

  • Coordinate the preparation of compelling grant applications that demonstrate the organisation’s conservation impact and funding needs.

  • Work with the Communications Manager to develop persuasive narratives and supporting materials for grant proposals.

  • Collaborate with the Finance Manager to ensure accurate budgets, financial projections, and consistency between funding proposals and organisational plans.

  • Monitor grant deadlines, reporting requirements, and renewal opportunities to maintain strong relationships with institutional funders.

  • Ensure that grant management processes support accountability, transparency, and effective use of funds.

5. Donor Stewardship and Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong, trusted relationships with major donors, philanthropic partners, trusts, and foundations.

  • Ensure donors receive timely acknowledgements, meaningful updates, and clear information about the impact of their contributions.

  • Work with the Fundraising Officer to coordinate donor communications, stewardship activities, and fundraising campaigns.

  • Use Salesforce to manage donor pipelines, track prospective funders, record engagement, and implement tailored donor strategies.

  • Develop approaches that strengthen donor retention, deepen relationships, and encourage long-term financial support.

  • Identify opportunities to increase donor engagement and encourage renewed or increased contributions.

6. Campaign Strategy and Individual Giving

  • Lead the development of individual giving strategies and campaigns to attract new supporters and retain existing donors.

  • Design engaging supporter journeys that strengthen donor relationships and encourage continued giving.

  • Work with the Fundraising Officer to coordinate campaign planning, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Collaborate with the Communications Manager to ensure fundraising content and storytelling align with organisational goals.

  • Identify opportunities to expand the reach and effectiveness of individual giving campaigns.

  • Monitor campaign performance and use insights to improve donor acquisition, retention, and income generation.

7. Team Leadership and Staff Development

  • Line-manage the Fundraising Officer, providing clear direction, setting objectives, and monitoring performance.

  • Review work outputs and ensure fundraising activities are delivered effectively and to a high standard.

  • Provide regular feedback, coaching, and professional development opportunities.

  • Foster collaboration across the fundraising team and other departments.

  • Support the development of effective systems and processes that improve fundraising delivery and accountability.

8. Fundraising Performance, Reporting and Analysis

  • Monitor fundraising performance, assess income trends, and evaluate progress against agreed targets.

  • Analyse fundraising data to inform strategic decisions and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Monitor external philanthropy trends and adapt fundraising strategies to respond to changing opportunities.

  • Prepare clear, data-driven reports for senior leadership and the Board.

  • Deliver regular fundraising updates through quarterly reviews and Board reporting.

  • Use performance insights to strengthen accountability, improve fundraising effectiveness, and support long-term financial planning.

9. Organisational Leadership and External Engagement

  • Contribute to organisational planning as a member of the senior leadership team.

  • Identify opportunities for innovation, growth, and stronger fundraising performance.

  • Represent Lion Landscapes in external fundraising networks and with philanthropic partners.

  • Promote ethical, transparent, and responsible fundraising practices.

  • Ensure fundraising strategies are integrated with the organisation’s broader conservation mission and strategic direction.

10. Due Diligence, Compliance and Risk Management

  • Conduct due diligence and ethical screening of prospective major donors and corporate funding relationships in consultation with the Chief Operating Officer before pursuing or accepting funding.

  • Ensure fundraising activities comply with relevant regulatory requirements, including the UK Fundraising Regulator’s Code of Fundraising Practice, Charity Commission guidance, and UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).

  • Support appropriate sanctions and anti-money laundering screening for corporate and high-net-worth donors, reflecting the organisation’s operations in the UK, Kenya, and Tanzania.

  • Identify and elevate potential reputational, ethical, financial, and compliance risks to the Chief Operating Officer and Joint CEOs before proceeding with funding relationships.

  • Maintain transparent and responsible fundraising practices that protect the organisation’s reputation and uphold its values.
