Job summary

Matchtech are recruiting for a Functional Systems Engineer to join a leading defence organisation in Bristol. Hybrid working with approx.

3 days on-site, salary up to £57,000 depending on experience, and security-screening eligibility required. You will translate customer requirements into system and software requirements, support design activities, assist with certification and assurance efforts, and coordinate with stakeholders across domestic and international programmes to ensure system

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in systems engineering, ideally within a complex or safety-critical environment.
  • Strong background in requirements management and derivation.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as DOORS, DOORS NG, or Rhapsody.
  • Ability to conduct system studies and trade-off analysis.
  • Experience managing engineering change and configuration processes.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts clearly.
  • Experience engaging with and managing multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in complex product or system development environments is advantageous.

Functional Systems Engineer

Location: Bristol
Type: Permanent | Full-time
Working Pattern: Hybrid (approx. 3 days on-site due to project requirements)
Salary: Up to £57,000 (depending on experience)

About the Role

Matchtech are working with a leading organisation in the defence sector who is expanding its Systems Engineering capability to support the ongoing development and delivery of advanced ground-based defence systems.

This role sits within a growing functional systems team and offers the opportunity to work across a diverse portfolio of programmes, supporting both domestic and international customers. You will play a key role in shaping system capability, ensuring requirements are clearly defined, and supporting successful delivery and certification of complex technologies.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on project needs, you will contribute across several core systems engineering activities, including:
