Job summary

Remedy Tutoring in Coulsdon and surrounding areas seeks an experienced Functional Skills Tutor to deliver personalised tuition in English and Maths. You will support students aiming for Entry Level to Level 2 qualifications, adapting lessons to individual needs and ensuring engagement.

The role involves planning tailored lessons, preparing students for assessments, and liaising with parents as needed. A minimum of 2 years’ teaching or tutoring experience and PGCE/QTS are preferred.

Qualifications

• A minimum of 2 years' teaching or tutoring experience.
• Relevant teaching or tutoring qualifications, with a recognised teaching qualification such as PGCE or QTS preferred.
• Strong understanding of the Functional Skills English and Maths curriculum and the requirements of Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications.
• Experience supporting children and young people with additional learning needs, SEN or gaps in their education.
• Full driving licence and access to reliable transport, as travel between tuition locations may be required.
• Excellent communication, organisation and lesson-planning skills.
• Patient, encouraging and flexible approach, with the ability to motivate students who may have experienced difficulties within education.

Responsibilities

• Deliver tailored Functional Skills tuition in English and Maths, working towards appropriate Entry Level and Level 1 or Level 2 qualifications.
• Plan and deliver engaging, structured lessons tailored to each student’s needs, learning style and ability.
• Support students with English skills including reading, writing, spelling, grammar and communication.
• Help students strengthen Maths skills including numeracy, calculations, fractions, percentages, measurements and applying maths to daily life.
• Prepare students for Functional Skills assessments and examinations, where appropriate.
• Monitor and record student progress, adapting teaching strategies to targets.
• Develop positive relationships with students to encourage participation and motivation.
• Incorporate practical, real-life examples to illustrate how English and Maths apply outside the classroom.
